  • Speed hit on ATTO RAID card in 4x slot

    hey guys

this isn’t a SAN question, but a RAID card question. i’m looking at building a Mac Pro for DaVinci Resolve, which runs best with 2 GFX cards in slots 1 and 2. if i put the ATTO RAID card in a 4x slot (3 or 4), what kind of speed hit am i looking at, since the ATTO cards are 8x cards?

i’m looking at 2 different configs for this comp. one with the card running the 4 internal sleds with an adapter. or a second with the card connected to 8 drive array like the iStorage Pro with an expander (not at the same time). is it possible the 8 drive array would take a bigger hit than the 4 drive array, since there’s fewer SAS lanes being used with 4 drives?

sorry for not being specific on the cards. if i went with option one, it would probably be the ATTO R644, whereas with option 2, i would buy the R680. or i might buy a used 3Gbs card if one were available.

    thanks

    you are doing this wrong.
Read the Davinci Resolve manual. You need a Cubix expansion chassis, to do this correctly.

Don’t want to spend the money for the Cubix ? Then tough noogies.
Tell you cheap ass client to do things THE RIGHT WAY.

    the ATTO R380 does about 600MB/sec in a x16 and about 450MB/sec in a x4 slot.

Haha, I’m the cheap ass client. Bob, I’m so offended.

i think 450MB/s is an acceptable performance hit, vs. the price of the Cubix chassis. at least for me. i can always grow later.

    thanks

    hey Bob

i just took a look at the Resolve Config guide, and even with the expansion chassis, BMD still recommends putting the HBA in slot 4 and not the expansion chassis. so it would still be stuck at 4x
