So we filmed a music video – the musician mimed to the track which we slowed by 10%. We then speeded it up by 10% in Final Cut (so clip was at 110%). We thought that would match back up with the proper spped of the track but it doesn’t seem to sync up. We filmed at 24fps?? What are we doing wrong??

Ok I could be wrong but I dont think your maths quite works,

If the original speed was 24 and you slowed by 10% then your frame rate was 24fps – 2.4fps = 21.6 fps

However if you speed up 21.6 by 10% you get

    21.6fps + 2.16fps = 23.76 fps

I think you need to speed up by 11.111111% to get back to 24fps.

Then again my maths is rubbish too but seems to add up ??

    Thanks for the comeback

So even though I filmed it in 24FPS and the band just played it slower FPS is still a factor? Wow this is hard to get your head around eh!

    Gonna try your maths

    Thanks again!

I have not quite thought this through and to be honest I am still not sure I am right because wont that just get you back to the original speed rather than your desired effect ?

What were you trying to achieve – the video looking slightly slow but obviously maintaining sync ?

I am not sure you can do this without a corresponding frame rate change in the camera as both need to match.

Doing one without the other doesnt quite work does it ?

    best wishes
