Speed Change Problems in AE
I’m trying to create a simple 75% speed change in AE with some 8-bit uncompressed SD footage. The footage renders out correctly with no speed change, but any speed change causes strange tearing and artifacting during moderate to rapid camera moves. Any suggestions?

Well if you’re using the timewarp function or Pixel motion, then you may see issues during fast movement. For more control over the setting of the timewarp, precompose your footage at normal speed and use the timewarp effect plug-in. There are many helpful setting that will allow you to blend area’s after effects can’t “guess”.

Are you applying the speed change to the entire clip at once? That’s not advisable. Such things should be done on a per-shot basis. You may also want to consider a different speed – 75% is an odd number that will interpolate far more frames/ fields than 80%, 72% or others.

I misspoke in my original post; I am actually doing a slo-mo effect using Time Stretch at 175% (not 75% as originally posted). I am also using Frame Blending and Pixel Motion. Is this the correct procedure?
I will redo on a per shot basis as you suggest.
What are the correct percentage multiples I should consider if 175% is not a good multiple?

Any even multiple of the composition framerate is a safe bet (e.g. 50, 100, 200 for PAL) as is any setting of the framerate minus an even number of frames/ fields. It’s not written in stone, but it certainly helps if you have as many original frames in your modified footage, even if you use the best quality and motion estimation. Minimizes smear and ghosting.
