I went through looking at all the details and matching the same zoom and putting the focus on the Front Right channel as shown on your screen shot and it works on mine. The one difference I noticed is that the length of the audio file is different. On mine it is 20.553 as shown in the bottom left hand section where it shows start, length, and cursor. On your screen shot it shows longer, but I found that is due to selecting past the end of the file (edge of the screen). I can’t reproduce it on my system. What video card do you have? I’m using the Nvidia GTX 570. The system requirements state for video:

Supported NVIDIA or AMD/ATI GPU with 512 MB or more RAM:

NVIDIA: GeForce GTX 2xx Series or higher with driver 285.62 or later. Quadro 400 or higher (or Quadro FX x700 or higher) with driver 285.62 or later.

AMD/ATI: Radeon HD 47xx or higher GPU with Catalyst driver 11.7 or later. If using a FirePro GPU, FirePro unified driver 8.85 or later is required.

I would try going to the View menu and select Advanced Settings… and choose Reset All Settings. I tried to see if I could change the Selected Layer color to black and get the same result as you. I was successful in having a back waveform against a black background, but the layer box also turned dark grey rather than red as shown on your screen.

If that does not work, then uninstall and then remove any folders or registry entries left behind. I doubt the upgrade removed the previous settings when it force an uninstall.

Thanks for doing this research, Mark. My video card is an ATI Sapphire Radeon HD7970, with 3gb of memory, which should be adequate. I checked the logs and could see no errors listed. I reset all colors and all settings, without success. And I uninstalled with the Windows “program uninstall” function, before installing Build 25, so it wasn’t a forced uninstall. I’m not sure how to check the registry for left-over entries. I opened the practice project again from the program disc and the length shows as 20.554. I found a way to see the extracted waveform, in green, by clicking off the “new layer” box, to turn it green; but the tools are greyed out, so no further manipulation is possible.

Definitely strange. So you verified that it extracted the waveform to the new layer since you can show it in green when it is not selected to be modified (red). You did reset all the colors which should remove the registry entry that sets the color override. I was trying to modify mine to get the waveform color to be black, but the layer box to be red. I noticed you have the Aero features turned on with Windows from the transparency I see in the title bar on the screen shot. I normally have that off and turn off system sounds too to avoid conflicts. But I went ahead and turned mine back on and still could not reproduce what you see. You could try changing the color of the Selected Layer (View-Advanced Settings) to something other than red, black, or green to see if it is related to displaying the default red color against the black background. I was trying to find an option to change the background to something other than black to see if we could then see the waveform. I’m wondering if it has to do with the QT libraries it uses for writing to the display.

I turned off the Aero feature and it made no difference to Spectralayers’ operation; nor did it when I changed the “selected layer” to several colors other than red, green and black. I can’t see any option for changing the background color. Then I tried installing the software in my old computer. It worked fine, so there must be some issue with my new computer. Haven’t seen any other issues, though. I don’t know what the QT libraries are, so can’t comment there.

Very odd problem, first time I hear about that.
I can only assume there is a problem either with your graphic card, or your graphic card drivers… Either way it’s very likely an OpenGL issue, but then it should have triggered a warning in the software logs.
To narrow down the problem you may try upgrading (or downgrading) your graphic card drivers, if it doesn’t fix the problem then try plugging the graphic card from your old computer into the new computer (replacing the HD 7xxx you have).

Well, thanks for all your efforts. I seem to specialise in problems that haven’t been seen before 🙂
My drivers are up-to-date and the video card is one of the latest, so I don’t think I want to downgrade either for Spectralayers. I’ll just live with Vegas Pro on one computer and Spectralayers on another and put this down to one more Sony fail.

I had the same problem, on a macbook pro, remembered the million monkeys and started pressing keys (more or less), first rationally then randomly. when I pressed “esc” key (once), I started to be able to select “hear” in several layers. hope it helps.

Max, I was a little premature in my response to your suggestion. I’m sure you are a genius, but pushing “escape” doesn’t solve my problem, after all. What it does is to un-solo the layer carrying the removed sounds – ie, turns it from red to green. I can then see the sounds that have been removed in green – but they have to be in red before you can make any adjustments to them. When I click the layer, to solo it again, I’m back to a screen with no sound or frequency lines on the timeline. But thanks for your inputs, anyway.
