  • Special Effects Software with Vegas?

I’ve decided that I need to starting learning how to do special effects work. I’m thinking of buying Adobe After Effects. Will AE work well with Vegas? Is there other special effects software out there that I should consider besides AE?

AE is pretty much a standard for effects, especially since so many 3rd party plugins are available for it. No problems with Vegas and AE either that I know of.

When I was in your same boat (wondering which path to go down) I poked around with AE and Digital Fusion. Something in the After Effects scenario never made sense to me, but I picked up Digital Fusion immediately. Coming from the old days of “upstream/downstream” compositing, DF works the same way, and I’ve been making a living with it ever since with version THREE (I think they’re on six or seven by now). As with anything, they keep “improving” it, so who knows now how complex it’s become, but you might want to check it out.

You might want to look at Boris Continuum Complete 7 (BCC7) for Vegas Pro 10. This will allow you to do many of the special fx that others are doing in After Effects right in Vegas Pro. I have both AE and BCC7 and I find myself using AE less and less because BCC7 lets me stay right inside Vegas all the time.

I was wondering about the same things and at least I know that AE will work but I also have other options. I haven’t picked up Vegas yet and I was considering going back the Adobe path. Vegas is an option I’m exploring. I’m just a hobbyist looking to have some fun.
