Lay the second scene clip on the video track above the first one.

Use Motion Tab effects to crop the top clip down the center.

Use the Eight point garbage matte filter (under video filters/mattes) to create a more complex crop. If that precison isn’t enough you’ll need to use After Effects or something similar to rotoscope/key one of your characters.

Im betting it is more a issue of the camera not lining up properly, the camera MUST be in the EXACT same position each time. ANY slight difference will be vary noticeable.

Inside a car with out a proper camera mount it would be extremely difficult to get it perfect.

There are no “technical solutions” to your “artistic problems”.

Hey Zane,

I realize that spacing is crucial in order to do the trick. And I agree that the camera must be in the exact same position for both shots. I plan on setting my camera outside of the car on a tripod looking through the passenger front window seat. The problem is that my character in the passenger will be moving around to the point that he will “lose an arm” whenever he crosses the cropped clip.

I have a couple of days to mess around before the shoot begins, will keep at it.

This effect will be best achieved in After Effects using rotoscoping techniques. I’ve done this very effect multiple times for Good Eats with Alton and his “twin brother” BA. If done correctly, there is no need for anything other than a simply mask or split screen with a soft edge. If one character crosses into another’s space, then you need AE’s masking abilities.
