Source vs Program monitoring – image not the same size?
Okay, first question from me, Super Newbie:
I imported into Premiere Pro 7.0 an AVI file of a slide show containing a sequence of some still photos.
Why (in the name of the seven mad gods that rule the sea) would the “source monitor” show the clip with the correct proportions without being cropped or zoomed, but the “program monitor” seems to automatically zoom in on the images somewhat. Now, I’m not talking about the “fit” button on each monitor, which doesn’t seem to have any effect on the problem. Even when I export the file from Premiere Pro, I get the zoomed-in effect in the new AVI file. It seems as if the program monitor changes the pixel aspect ratio or something (wild guess here). Other than that, is this some known glitch with Premiere Pro 7.0?

The seven mad gods are only mad because you didn’t read the manual or the help file regarding stills.
The stills are not zoomed in. The problem is that they are not zoomed out in the monitor window the way they are in the source window. Your pics are bigger than your frame size. Scale them down in the Motion effect.
Or, set the Project Settings (general tab) to automatically scale the clips to project dimensions when placed on the sequence. The Motion effect is still being used, but automatically.

According to the help file, at the project window, if you right click on the AVI clip that I import (again, which contains the slide show. I am not importing still images) and select “interpret,” you should be able to select “Use pixel aspect ratio from file: square pixels (1.0)” supposedly preserving the original image. Here’s yet another twist to the dilemma: Even when I do some edits to the original AVI file, then export it from Premiere Pro as an AVI file, then import the edited clip opening it again using Adobe Premiere Pro, I get the same problem: the image in the “Source” monitor does not appear the same as the image in the “program” monitor. No matter what I import into Premiere Pro the two monitor images don’t look the same, and the final output is always what I see on the program monitor (which has the “zoomed-in” appearance. We’re not talking about just still images. This is an AVI file. What am I not getting here? Is there something like a path that goes in a chain from the source monitor to the timeline then to the program monitor? (Please don’t just tell me to read the help files. If I could find the answer in the help files I wouldn’t need to ask at a forum! In fact, because there’s nothing in the help files regarding my dilemma I’m under the impression that it is a glitch in the application, which I already inquired about in my first post.)
Still hoping for an answer from someone who knows what I’m talking about. 🙂

Steven yes, as per your suggestion: Go to Project Settings>General tab>click on “Scale clips to project dimensions when adding to sequence” and that did it. Both monitors now appear with same image.
You have to excuse me. I’m such a newb!
