  • Source Timecode on QT Reference Movies

    Greetings:

In my post production workflow, I would like to make a single video reference file to serve two masters. The first being the audio guy and the second being the producer to use when making graphic list and scripting notes. Therefore, matching time code (in this case with the timeline) would be helpful. I know I can use the time code generator/reader to produce a lower third burn, but that will interfere with the graphics. Is there a way to embed the time code into the QT Movie? I have noticed that when I make a FCP QT file, I get three TC options during playback in QT (Standard, Time code, Frame Number) but when I use Sorenson, h264, and the like I only get two options (standard and Frame Number). Is there a setting or a particular compressor that matches the source time code?

    Of course this is possible.
Timecode is a track in the QT that can be copied, pasted like any other track.
Also, you can set it in FCP, using the TC function. Here you can also change the tapename if needed. Note that this is ‘destructive’, you’re not altering the way FCP sees the clip, you alter the clip, and FCP will reflect that.

Now if you make a copy of a clip with Compressor, i believe the TC will be copied. If you do it in QT pro, you probably have to copy/paste the original TC track in the new movie.

I certainly think its possible, but I’m confused because if a self contained FCP carries smtpe tc over automatically, why wouldn’t a self contained compressed version do the same? How would you copy the track over? Where are the setting is in the converson for that?

    Thanks,

    Erich

[Erich Hoberg] “I know I can use the time code generator/reader to produce a lower third burn, but that will interfere with the graphics”

If it makes a difference, you can put the TC burn anywhere you want and at whatever size you want. I also remove the TCR prefix too so just the numbers appear.
