Yes that’s right – Source Name somehow was magically unchecked
(by me). I don’t know what I did – but I couldn’t seem to get
this column to be rechecked. Just didn’t want to happen.
The internet is getting too big to find out fixes for these
things. Go ahead try to search “After Effects”+”Source Name”
unchecked – or something similar. It is laughable.

The fix seemed to be to uninstall/re-install as all new
compositions that I would create would have no Source Name column.
I don’t know about you, but I need this column to do just about
anything on my timeline, or adding masks, effects ect. (you know
that stuff after effects does) Renders the whole software a useless
    pile of files.

Anyone else ever manage to do this brilliant act? Is there an
easier way to resolve it. I didn’t even think it was supposed to
be possible – this is why Source Name is grayed out at all times.

When I searched for ‘source name’ in After Effects Help, the second search result gave me the answer that I think that you’re looking for.

Click this to do the search that I did for ‘source name’.

Here’s the sentence in After Effects Help that I think that you’re looking for, from the “View and change layer information” page:

“To alternate between viewing the names of source footage items and the names of layers in the Timeline panel, click the Layer Name/Source Name column heading in the Timeline panel.”

    Todd,
I did find this in the help when I was trying to fix this issue.
This seems like it would help if everything were operating “normally”
I think my problem stepped outside of the realm of normal.

When I went to the column selection – “Source Name” was grayed out
as normal, but also unchecked (not normal).
    The function for switching between
Source Name and Layer Name also ceased to work – even with the
prescribed hot key. See if you can recreate this situation. How does
one uncheck a grayed out option? (grayed out to prevent you from
    unchecking it)
