  • Soundtrack PRO, audio interface clicking before playback

    Hi,

I recently purchased an audio interface, the Focusrite Saffire 6 and while it does the job just fine recording audio, I am having a problem editing the audio in Soundtrack Pro. Now, I am not sure if it’s STP, or the interface, but when I play back audio in STP (and this only happens in STP), there is a slight delay (less than half a second) and a click before the audio starts playing. Is this a latency issue? I thought latency only occurred during live playback (which I haven’t experienced).

Anyone out there had a similar problem?

    Thanks!

Tech Specs: Macbook Pro, OS 10.6.5, 2.6 Intel Core Due, 4 Gigs of RAM

Sounds like a clocking issue. Is the Focusrite compatible with STP? I am sure Apple will have a list of compatible audio I/O units somewhere online.

That sounds like you may be using the general Core class drivers rather than the device’s specific drivers. Have you installed the latest drivers off the Focusrite website? (https://www.focusrite.com/support/saffire/saffire_6_usb)

What names does the selected output have in STP’s preferences, or the system AMS? That could be a hint.

Focusrite products are missing from Apple’s compatibility info for ProApps (https://www.apple.com/finalcutstudio/resources/supportdevices.php) but so are other interfaces I’ve seen working. All Core-compatible interfaces should work, in theory.

Latency occurs during any kind of playback, but is doubled while in input-monitoring situations, which is why most people associate it with recording. Non-optimized drivers are often the culprit with unusually high latency values. The click in the audio hints at other possible issues like clocking, though. Are there no glitches at all after that click?

    Hi Jean-Christophe,

Thanks for the detailed reply. I had installed the latest drivers and still the clicking persisted. The output and input setting in STP are both set to the Focusrite. I tried adjusting the latency – no difference and then thought perhaps I could adjust the buffer setting (as per instruction from the friendly support folk at Focusrite, but I can’t find anything in STP that allows you to adjust it.

I did find this link, which I thought would be useful, but then it turned out I cannot select some of the options on my Macbook Pro.
