Sound volume different on speakers and headset
Posted by Bel Silva on August 19, 2019 at 3:35 pmHi all, so, I’m using Sony Vegas 14…
When I listen to all the sounds on the vid through speakers, it sounds okay.. but when I use my headset, it becomes too loud! If I adjust the volumes on the different tracks so I can hear it better on my headset, I can barely hear it right on my speaker… I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong. :'(Graham Bernard replied 6 years, 9 months ago 4 Members · 12 Replies -

Hi Bel! So you wished to have separate Levels for Speakers and Cans? Yes? How would your PC discriminate between each? I have an external Audio Card called a PreSonus AUDIO BOX USB and this does have a separate knob for adjsuting PHONE OUT. It doesn’t change my Edirol MA-150s speakers. Does your card have a separate Phone Out and Speaker Out options that you can level hyourself? Have a look at your AUdio Card?

August 19, 2019 at 7:05 pmI have a Presonus audio box 4 VSL it has different volume outputs.
I think the question was speakers VS headphones.
There is not a simple answer, the sound is going to be different, it depends from the fidelity of the speakers and headphones, it’s obvious that many headphones can’t reproduce the sound of a 15″ speakers.
I have 2 sets of monitors and a Television connected to my computer, I alternate. Usually when the sound is acceptable on my lousy television it is good on the other speakers as well or needs little adjustment.I keep in mind how most people listen to my music.

Really? I read this as levels not quality:

August 19, 2019 at 8:50 pmMaybe as a musician I perceive the audio questions as volume as well as frequencies. The obvious should have been the headphone is right in the ear the speaker depends where is locate.
I used to mix audio on studio monitors, the sound was beautiful only to be disappointed when I heard the same sound on a flat screen TV or a laptop, The music had a very nice bass on the monitors when played on a laptop was like half the music was missing the music had no body and no volume.
I went out and got a very cheap computer’s speakers but even those cheap speakers were better than a laptop and a flat screen TV. So now I connected also a flat screen TV to my computer.
I drive myself crazy trying to get a decent sound from my TV and speakers!Ciao

Here’s a good read from an older post. This should help you get the right and proper levels for your finished product.

If you have voice only (not great for music) you can also use Levelator. It works beautifully to normalize your track(s) and get rid of those pesky drops in the level. The overall end result will make you wonder how you managed before without it. If you want to try it, it’s a freeware. Download link below.

Hi Francois! Your advice is so timely, I have just the job I need for Levelator, and I couldn’t remember the name of it. Do you know if it works with Win10? I notice that it’s stopped development at Win7?

August 20, 2019 at 10:30 amHi Graham
I’m running Win 10 and it works flawlessly. I also have Voice Changer in my bag of tricks, also a freeware and comes in handy.

August 20, 2019 at 10:36 amHi again Graham
Addendum: To other readers of this post, I forgot to mention that it will only work with .WAV and .AIFF files. You will need to convert your file(s) before using it.
Cheers !

August 20, 2019 at 11:44 amHi Graham
That is odd. I’ve just tested various .WAV files with different bit depth (up to 32) , using Win 10 Pro. No issues.
Could it be that you tried to drag a non-compatible file and it’s just sitting there stuck in a loop, not responding ?
I’ll run some more scenarios and get back to you.
Cheers !
