  • Sound Problems – Removing Unwanted sound

    Guys

The audio in my footage has a kind of hushed hissing probably from the wind. For some strange reason using FCP 6 i can’t ‘send to’ Soundtrack Pro cos that ‘choice’ is never open to me — don’t know why. I right click ‘open in editor’ and the clip opens as a quick time file and not in Soundtrack Pro as i would expect.

Is there any way i can use JUST FCP filters or Apple filters to get the hushed hissing out?

    Thanks
    Glenn

Soundtrack Pro is the way to remove this unwanted sound… It’s got a command for just this very thing.

Isolate a bit of the sound in Soundtrack, set it to be the “noise print” (for further instructions search that term in soundtrack pro’s online User’s manual) from the Process menu, then from the same menu choose remove noise… adjust the sound accordingly during playback adjusting in the window that will open, export it back to FCP.

It works like a charm. Air conditioning, airplanes, cars, etc in the background either gone or you can leave a touch of it etc… wonderful.

On Ken Stone’s site there are a couple of good primers that may help you and that allow you do some tweaks on your audio within FCP. Here is the link to the first article:

    Hi there,

Thanks for your advice here, i gave it a go with my problem but it appears my difficulties are a little more complex.

I recorded an interview with a guy who i kitted up with a clip on mic. I turned off all other audio channels. Unfortunately the mic picked up a guy talking on his phone in the background who at times can be heard while the interview is taking place, occasionally as the interviewer is talking.

Is there anyway you know of that I could eliminate this unwanted background noise beyond the methods you suggest here, or perhaps using the methods you suggest here (I may have done a bad job first time round!).

Would really appreciate your help as a re-shoot would be a bit of a nightmare!

    Cheers,
    Mark

    Mark,

What you’re asking us is tantamount to trying to remove chocolate from a cake after it’s baked. You can work hard to disguise the problem, maybe put some icing on top, but it’s still gonna be chocolate cake in the end. So, the bottom line is, your audio is never going to be good.
