  • Sound in 720P/N & 1394 Output

Posted by Chris Elley on January 19, 2006 at 3:54 pm

Jan or someone who has used the HVX-200,

Could you please clarify the first two bullet points on page 35 of the user manual under Step 4 of Native Recording:
    1) “No signals are output from the 1394 terminal during recording or recording standby in the native mode.”
    2) “Sound is not recorded. However, sound will be recorded when the same frame rate is used for both recording and playback.”

The bottom line that is that I would like to know whether I can record and monitor sound in 720/24PN and whether 720/24PN will also be captured to devices such as the Firestore product when it is available?

Do bullet pioints 1 and 2 only apply to the other 9 Native frame rates ‘other’ than 720/24PN and 720/30PN?

    Thank you,

[ecca2323] “1) “No signals are output from the 1394 terminal during recording or recording standby in the native mode.””

thats because the Native mode is card only – via the FW connection you will only receive a video stream – that means that it would follow the specs for the 720p/60 format. – so what ever you capture would need to be run back thru the software FRC in Final Cut to get to the frame rate you shot it at. Remember that your actual frame rate is always embedded into a 60 frame data stream

[ecca2323] “2) “Sound is not recorded. However, sound will be recorded when the same frame rate is used for both recording and playback.””

No sound is passed thru when capturing in the PN modes with Variable Frame rates. This is the same as with the VariCam when converting via the frame rate converters you loose any sound on tape.

Shooting and playing back at the same speed ( 24 lets say) there is no issue.

Sound is recorded at the native frame rate, but not at undercrank/overcrank speeds. So if you shoot 720/24pN at 24fps, yes sound is recorded. If you shoot 720/24pN at 26fps, no sound gets recorded. It has to be shot at the same frame rate as the underylying timebase in order for audio to be recorded.

So if you shot 720/24pN at 30fps, no sound. If you shot 720/30pN at 30ps, yes sound.
If you shot 720/30pN at 24fps, no sound. Has to be at the same frame rate as the timebase.

As far as firewire streaming, the “n” modes do not stream over the firewire. Only the “over 60” modes do.
