  • Sound Forge – Very Strange Problem – No Sound One Channel

    Gurus –

As I mentioned in my title, I have no sound in Sound Forge 8.0d on my right channel IF you are listening to the audio on speakers. If, however, you plug in the headphones into the front of my Focusrite LE sound card, the sound is there. The sound meters in Sound Forge does show the wave files and the volume of the playback even though you cannot hear it in the speakers. I am working on a Vegas project and making copies of the wave files for editing in Sound Forge. I am using Vegas 7.0d.

    Some things I have tried:

The last video I did was in 24pa, so I opened a video file in Vegas I shot in 60i to see if the problem was the same, it was.

If I bring in a music wave file not in the Vegas project, the volume can be heard through the speakers on both right and left channels.

I use to be able to hear the audio on the speakers in both channels and have not made any changes to my settings (that I know of). Does anyone have a suggestion of what might be going on here.

As usual your advice is greatly appreciated.

    Grasshopper,

Just to clarify, you hear both speakers in SoundForge if you open a
file from within soundforge such as a wav file, however you have your problem when you try to send your audio from Vegas to Soundforge via the “send to Soundforge command”.
    Is this correct?

    Rick –

Thank you for the catch. One other thing I tried, opening a DVX100a 60i avi file directly into Sound Forge that I had captured last year using Vegas as my capture program. Again, the sound shows up in the right channel on Sound Forge but can only be heard through the headphones.

One thing I have wanted to try – reverse channels in Sound Forge so the audio on the right channel is on the left channel but I can’t seem to find how to do it. I can reverse the audio but it stays on the same channel.

You are correct in that all other files open correctly in Sound Forge. I seem to be having this issue only with files I am using within Vegas and Sound Forge.

    Your thoughts?

    Additional Information:

I finally found the preset for switching channels. As a further hint, the problem stays with the right channel. If I send the right channel signal to the left channel, I can hear it on the speakers. For those that may want to know where to find this. It is under Process Channel Converter. Look through the presets and you will find one that says “Swap Channels”.

    Grasshopper,

Let’s try the easiest explaination for seeing a stereo waveform in Soundforge but only hearing one side.

Is it possible that once your waveform is opened in soundforge that one side (channel) has been highlighted (selected)? This would cause you to hear only the side selected.

Send the audio from Vegas to soundforge and see if one side has been highlighted. If it has, double click in the center of the waveform to highlight both channels and play it.

Was this the problem or do we need to look deeper?

Both sets of waveforms show up in Sound Forge and I can jump between them or listen to them together or individually on the headphones. I can reverse channels, still hear either/or on the headphones but the right channel can only be heard through the headphones.

I have to run off to do an errand but when I get back I’m thinking about reinstalling Sound Forge. Do you think that is a good idea or will it make things worse?

    Very Strange,

Perhaps a fresh install of Soundforge may help.
Before you do that, in Soundforge, go to preferences/Audio tab
and check to see if the proper Audio Device is selected and that
you have #1 Left and #2 Right selected.

That’s all I can think of to look for in Soundforge.
Since you see both channels making the trip from Vegas
I would suspect a channel routing problem in Soundforge,
or an incorrect setting in your audio devices “playback tab”
or corruption of your soundcard driver or Soundforge is corrupt.

The really strange thing is that all plays back fine from Soundforge as long as Vegas “Send to soundforge” is not used.

Seems to me like if you see both left and right channels in Soundforge it ought to play. Since you can hear it fine in the headphones it sounds more like a soundcard routing or soundforge channel routing issue.

If you get more info post it. I will check back later.

    Rick.

    Rick –

THANK YOU! You are awesome – you solved the problem. Per your suggestion, I went into the Preferences tab in Sound Forge and ran through options I had for the Default Playback Device. One combination all of the sudden allowed the audio to be played from both right and left channels through the speakers as well as via headphones. For those with a Saffire LE sound card, what ended up working was having the audio device set as Saffire LE ASIO, the Default playback device Play 7/Play8; the Default recording device Rec 5/Rec6.

Rick – you are a lifesaver. This was driving me nuts. Who knows why it changed but at least it is back to working properly. Thank you so much for jumping on this problem so quickly and helping me resolve it.
