Sound Clipping at -20db
I have just finish a day of recording sound for a TV commercial shot with 35mm film. The I had the meter at no more than -12db and sounds clipped and it also shows on wave form not as clipped but cut off the top.
I have to continue shooting tomorrow so if anyone has any idea, please let me know.
I used an M67 Senn. and also a studio mic. for some voice over and they both sounded the same. I even used different cables for the different mics. The only common denominator was a Marantz solid state recorder that the director brought himself(WAW recorder).Douglas Villalba

What meter was showing at -12? Were you going through a mixer? Explain the signal flow from mic to recorder.

Sounds like you’re over-driving the imput preamp.
Turn down the TRIM control on the input and/or switch the “attenuator” in on the Mic(s).

If the meters on the marantz were reading -12, it sounds like you were clippling at the mic. Then again it could be a setting in the recorder. Is there a limiter on the recorder? How far was the mic placed from the talent? Was anyone monitoring on headphones while recording?

Well we had our second day of shooting and everything went well. It happends that this particullar TV personality has a very estrange low frequency voice causing the mics to peak. We just had to keep the studio mic. 4 feet from him for the loops and instead of the Senn M67 we used a lesser quality mic.

I have a PMD670 and I looked through its menus to see if there might be a setting that would contribute to the problem you were having. Nothing obvious turned up. However, there is a 20db pad switch hidden under the panel on the top right that’s held in place by two screws. THe pad is either on or off. If it was off, try switching it on. That way you’ll attenuate the input signal by 20db. If the mic is overdriving the input pre, perhaps the pad would help eliminate the distortion.
