Sound Blankets
Posted by Vince Becquiot on April 4, 2008 at 5:12 pmFor all these years, I’ve been using pipe and velour drape on some location shoots, but I think it’s about time I invest in some sound blankets. While the velour drape works, I don’t own it and it’s really expensive for this purpose.
So, I am looking for the simplest and most effective solution. Something I can hang on walls and cellings if needed, hanging hardware tips welcome as well.
Thanks,
Vince

April 4, 2008 at 5:51 pmSound blankets AKA: furniture pads can cost as little as $5.00 or as much as $50.00. Though, buyer-beware: depending on the blanket, you might get what you pay for; little or no actual padding. That said, here are a couple of moving supply companies you might check out: http://www.dial-a-box.com. They have pads for around $20.00. You can also try http://www.cameronpackaging.com/premium_pads. One pad from them is $15.95 but, the more you buy the less they are. If you bought just 6 from them, they would only be $8.33 each. The other option is to get the sound blankets offered by Matthews (through B&H or filmtools.com) at around $45.00 each. The one thing the Matthews pads have are grommets so you can hang them (via rope or s-hook).
In terms of mounting them (those without grommets), I would recommend getting what are called Pony Clamps. You can get these at The Home Depot or on line at filmtools.com. You should also invest in some c-stands with arms.

April 4, 2008 at 7:59 pmIf you have a Two Men & a Truck in town, I would try them. They have some of the best furni pads out there. They are black on one side and white on the other, so they can even double for fill if necessary in a small, hot area. Very thick and usually only $15-$20 and you can pick them up right at their store.

April 5, 2008 at 4:39 amI just came across these sound blankets (72×80, 8 lbs per!) at a site called moverssupplies.com:

These sound like just what you’re looking for. I’m planning to buy a few myself, for my office and onsite use.

April 6, 2008 at 6:42 pmYeah, that’s basically the same thing. I like those. But what’s with the “Products marked with *** dont exist in desired quantity in our stock. You can buy them anyway and check the quantity we have in stock for immediate deliver in the checkout process.” They are marked with the “***”. And that’s the most use of symbols that aren’t substitutes for curse words I’ve ever used. Pretty cool.

April 28, 2008 at 5:09 pmI have always ordered them from Markertek. They are thicker than
the furniture pads that I used to use, and work better too. They also have a version with grommets. I just use c-stands clamps and these….. https://www.markertek.com/Product.asp?baseItem=SAB-1&cat=ACOUSTICS&subcat=&prodClass=ACBLANKET&mfg=&search=0&off=
Oh, and they are 20 bucks, less if you buy 6 or more. Thanks,
