    Hi,

I write a new post because I thought we had solved the problem, but it seems that everytime it seems to be solved it becomes worse.

We are having a strange trouble with our multiclip edit. We are editing mainly with 2 videos + 1 audio. The video comes from P2 and we convert it to Quicktime with Final Cut. Audios are wav.

We are working on a 2x2gb G5 with 4,5 GB RAM, XRAID with 3TB. Mac OS 10.4.11 and Final cut 6.0.03.

We sync fine, and it edits to the sequence nicely. but when we start editing the multiclip angles, sometimes the angle looses track of which master clip is related to and takes the name of its neighbour angle clip. as long as the media is there it keeps referencing to the right media, but sometimes it looses track of which media file it was and then it is nightmare.

as we want ot offline and then offline back into HD, this is really worrying.

we had worked with multiclips before, when there were tapes and we redigitised to HDV from the original tapes, after having offlined in DV.

At some point we thought that by adding angle names to the clips and resyncing the problem was solved. it was solved temporarily, but when we move or copy those clips to another project (which will be necesary) some ramdon clips (inside the multiclip) start loosing their names and adopting that of their neighbour clips.

Anybody has an idea? Has it happened to anybody else?

    Thanks

    Hi Rafael,

We will try that, thanks. we have just ordered Final cut studio 7, do you think it will be better to update to the last version of Final Cut 6 or to update to 7 (Apple says it is not supported on non intel, but we have read that it does work)

    Thanks,

    hello,

we have copied part of the media to another system, that has Final Cut 6.0.5 installed. and it seems to work much better, but once we copy a sequence from one project to another one, the sequence starts to get corrupted somehow. Any new tips?

    Hi again,

and now we get a general error message when we try to export a movie from a sequence, when everything else was working, apart from not being able to copy a sequence from one project to another.

    Hi Lurre,
Try saving the project with a different name.
Is difficult for me to suggest you something.
In those cases, when FC start to behave bizarre, I run DiskWarrior. Most of the times works.
    Cheers,
    Rafael

    Hi,

We’ve already done that. no luck. We are probably going to try editing the old way, without the multiclips, going to standard sublicps rather than multiclips unless we find a solution on the meantime.

    Thanks

    Hi Lurre,
    Sorry I couldn’t help you.
I want to point to two things that you shoould take care:
    – You have 4,5 GBs RAM. I’ll rather let just 4 Gbs. Mac likes paired RAM and an even number of chips.
    – Try to avoid using WAV files in FC. The associated TC or whatever of the WAVs cause many syncs problems in FC. AIFF will be better.

I haven’t seen any problems with WAVE files (or better with BWAV) files since FCP 1.
The bigger problem is the handling of sound independent recorded from video in conjunction with subclips and multiclips – worst thing you can do is using subclips from linked AV (A from external audio) to create multiclips, this is very often unstable within FCP. One reason is that FCP doesn’t handle audio TC in a way it handles QT TC.
One option you got is to export the linked/merged clips either as reference or self-contained QT movie before starting to create multiclips. This makes things way more reliable. You also may cut audio which normally starts earlier and ends later compared to video to the duration of the video – that helps as well.
If you use audio as an individual angle in the multiclip arrangement you should export that as QT movie as well to get a QT timecode.

As you mentioned you’re working with P2 – I got a custom app which handles automatic P2 with BWAV sync, multiclip creation and creation of QT files. It is used for several soap opera productions where fast and reliable sync and multiclip handling is needed since these are daily soaps.
If you are interested contact me off list.

    Regards
    Andreas

Just use the search function and you will find few reports.

    hello,

we have tried many things but the most stable thing so far seems to be to export a quictime movie from a merged clip, and then use that new clip to create the multiclip. But still testing and having some problems with batch export to make it more difficult.

One new question: do you think using 24 bit audio and 16 bit audio in the same multiclip can also create problems? the problem we have is that if we don’t use 24bit audio we might have to relink everything by hand to go to sound postproduction (we will have to check that with them on monday).

I will contact you by email about your app.

    Thanks for your help
