Sorenson Squeeze question
Posted by Jasonm on January 25, 2007 at 3:25 pmI’m tring to get some video with music on the web at a reasonable size and had some render questions. I’m using PPro and wondered 1) What settings might make a 1.5 minute video w/music size more manageable while retaining quality and 2) is the sorenson squeeze 3 that I see in the render options the same as the squeeze 3 you can buy online, or is this a dumbed down version?
Thanks!

January 25, 2007 at 7:59 pmUnless you have purchased the codec from Sorenson or have Squeeze installed, you have the Standard version. To tell for sure; in the media encoder, choose Quicktime as the format, drop down to the video tab and choose Sorenson 3 and the Video Codec and then click on the Options button. If Standard dont use it…it is poor.
You can try the H264 codec but your audience musr have QT 7.x to play it.
Otherwise stick to Windows Media Video 9.
Either method, choose a 512 mbps preset and change the resolution to 480 x 360. -

January 25, 2007 at 8:02 pmNo, you’re looking at the Sorenson Video Codec for a QT file. That is just a codec Sorenson released. What type of source material are you working with and what type of file do you want? WMV, QT, Flash. 320×240 is pretty standard, but music videos are usually high motion so you might want a larger size. The bit rate also depends on the audience you are trying to reach and what type of server you’re running. Post some more information about your material.

January 25, 2007 at 8:21 pmSure thing, and thanks to all the answers, I really appreciate the help!
The project uses line drawn images that are semi-animated. Music is playing while the animation takes place. I did the animation in after effects and can seem to do a lot with it without over doing the file size, but then I bring it into Premiere to match up and edit the music. it seems from there the file bloats to an obscene amount from where it started. Video without music can be 30-40mb but add music and it’s over a gig. I know after effects fairly well but premier and audition are pretty foriegn, especially where music is concerned.
Animation length is under 2 minutes.
Let me know if you need any other info.

January 25, 2007 at 9:17 pmWhy don’t you match the audio up in Premiere then export the audio only as a wav file and import that into your AE project. (or MP3 that might save a bit of space too. Just lay the audio down and export everything from AE. That might save on file size. Also, if you’re export for the web you should get a lot smaller file. Do you want a QT file as the final product?

January 25, 2007 at 11:37 pmQuicktime seems to be a standard for previews and such, I’m creating this as I go for a personal project so I’m not the most well versed in this software and file types. AVI seemed to have lower quality but I might easily be wrong.
I like the idea of porting it back to AE, I’ll give that a shot tonight. I’ll let you know how it turns out!

January 26, 2007 at 1:27 pmWell, if you going to place this on the web, you will want to stay away from an AVI. The file will be too big to be put on the web. You will either want to make a QT streaming file or a WMV. Those will be the easiest to make, and you could even use the Sorenson 3 codec if you wanted to make a QT file.

February 6, 2007 at 9:59 pmThank you for all the advice! I’ve found a copy of sorenson squeeze 3 on ebay and it seems to have solved all my issues except one. Text that renders fine in premiere get wavy after compression. There’s a link below to my rough trailer, you can see what I mean. I had the text to more before, but the distortion was even worse. What you see here is larger then I wanted thinking that the distortion was mostly a line thickness. Any idea if it’s scaling or something else that’s causing the waviness or is it just a byproduct of compression?
