Sony vegas/Davinci revival
Posted by Steve Lyons on December 31, 2012 at 4:36 pmHi
I want to import my footage into Davinci revival lite, i’m rendering out using Sony Vegas pro 12, using the Main concept AVC MP4 at 1080 25FPS PAl setting, I plan to import them into Davinci to grade, am i using the best setting….I’m doing it this way other than importing my raw files ( shot 25FPS PAl) into Davinci as I’ve already edited/cut what i need using Vegas.
Will i there be problems when i render out from Davinci as it is 24FPS ? and can any one recommend the best workflow.
Sorry for the questions as i am quite new to all this..

No. AVC/MP4 is a highly compressed deliver format. You should be using a digital intermediary codec like CineForm or Avid DNxHD.

Why would you render 25fsp to 24fps in Davinci? Does it have really good retiming capabilities?

If you didn’t have any questions, you would never learn anything new. 😉

Thanks for replying.
I’ve looked more into resolve and i can see that you need to change the frame rate within the initial set up screen, this I’ve done and everything seems ok.
A few more questions 🙂
Should you recommend that i just import my raw files (H.264) into resolve ?.
What setting would you recommend i use in Vegas to render out my project to import in resolve ? (i know you can use the scene detection function within resolve).
And what setting would you recommend to render out too full HD 1920/1080 in general. Many thanks

I assume you want to grade after you’ve finished editing which means you would want to export a finished edit into Resolve and not the original files.

As I said earlier, I would use CineForm or Avid DNxHD. I have a tutorial on my web site that shows you how to make these templates:
Avid DNxHD Template for Vegas Pro
Create a CineForm Render Template in Sony Vegas Pro
The CineForm codec is not free so you would have to buy CineForm NeoScene ($99 USD) or some other CineForm product to get it but it’s an exceptionally good digital intermediary codec. The Avid DNxHD codec is free and I give you a link to the download in my tutorial.

That would depend entirely on your target device. You will render to different formats depending on whether you are delivering DVD, Blu-ray, Internet, etc. If you are just looking for a general final master format/archive to repurpose from then CineForm is a good choice. You could also just render back to the original format of the captured footage (e.g., AVCHD, Sony MXF, XDCAM, etc.).

March 18, 2013 at 10:55 pmIt might be also helpful for you to look at another way of round-trip for Vegas Pro – DaVinci Resolve.
I found an economical way by DNxHD rendering the edited clips only by their needed lenght. This is done by some scripts and an EDL_Convert program. A saved text EDL will be adjusted that the final edit will include this “Head and Tail trim” as well as all transitions etc. say where they have to be.
Hence this concept can also be used by older versions of Sony Vegas Pro.
Description and download can be found here:
