I have never used Sony Vegas but I have used other programs like it. Over the past year I have used Final Cut Pro and AVID. I hear that Sony Vegas is a vary user friendly editing program but before I go out and buy ether FCP, AVID or Vegas I was wounding how dose Vegas compare to other editing programs in the way of user friendliness and what program would you recommend right now to be the best editing program that someone can buy. Thanks for you time.

I would strongly recommend downloading the demo version and trying it. Coming from a FCP background, there will be MANY differences – not necessarily “bad” differences but you’ll have to learn to approach things the way Vegas does things. I, personally, LIKE the way Vegas does things. It is very logical in how it works.

One of the first things to learn: there IS NO Razor tool – you don’t need one. Simply put the cursor where you wish to split the event and press “S”. If you check out Vegas, you may want to take a quick look through my newsletters (link below my name) paying particular attention to the “Beginner’s Corner” series beginning in issue #4.

    Ditto what Edward said.

My sense is that Vegas is a very friendly environment for people who really know windows. To the extent that it can, it obeys windows application interface conventions.

Avid has its own interface conventions that have heavily influenced most other editors, including FCP.

Having said that, anyone who can learn to edit on a computer can use Vegas very successfully, it’s an incredible value, and has amazing capabilities. Those other programs are good too, especially if you’re working with other editors or facilities that have invested in them.

Do check out the trial version.

Might add also that Vegas is a VERY powerful audio editor…whether for stereo editing or multitrack. From what I understand, audio is one of the weaknesses of some other editors.
