    Hello,

I recently acquired a Canon VIXIA HF-M40 HD camcorder for christmas. Very stoked on it. But now I am wondering if it is any use. Whenever I try and edit the footage in Sony Vegas Platinum HD 11 (I upgraded to this after vegas pro 9, thinking it woulf work better, which it didnt..), the preview is ridiculously choppy and impossible to work with. I have had NO luck finding an answer after going through thread after thread, so I had to create my own. I am very bummed that this does not work.

I have tried all of the dynamic ram, thread number, bla bla bla quick fixes and none of it does anything.

I am using an Intel 2.6 Ghz processor, with 2GB of DDR PC3200 RAM<-(recently purchased and didnt solve the problem at all..) with an x86 bit OS

I dont believe that I should have to upgrade to a $2000 computer to edit videos from a $350 camera

is there a better editing program that wont have this issue?

I might start filming in a lower resolution setting, and see if that works, but until then, this camcorder is useless!! 🙁 please help

camera records in AVCHD mts, up to 1920x1080p

    HELPP!

You’re not gonna like the answer, but AVCHD is heavily compressed and needs a lot of processor power to preview in real-time.

Your only solution with an underpowered PC is an intermediate file, such as Cineform, or the Vasst Gearshift proxy program.

I know, it sucks that it has to be that way. I never wouldve guessed that an entry level HD camera would need so much processor power. I cant imagine that my numerous friends making HD videos have all that nice of computers..

anyways, could you explain further, because i dont know what either of those things are?

Gearshift replaces your AVCHD with a proxy in lower resolution for editing, then swaps the original AVCHD just before you encode your output.

The Cineform codec lets you render your original AVCHD into a less compressed form that’s easier edit.

I have an extremely fast system and I was working with Vegas11 and everything slowed down to a crawl and impossible to work with. Another try with a different project went fine but days later I opened the Vegas11 project and many of the events on the timeline were all over the place and the project was a mess.
I’m sticking with Vegas10 for now.

The program works flawlessly on my mom’s Inspiron 1545, which has a dual-core processor. So until I get a newer PC, or Mac, I’ll do that because it works really well and is hassle-free. Thanks!!
