I just realized something; to get the black frames to go away, I can just re-load Vegas by minimizing and maximizing. I also found out that the black frames appear when I zoom out on the timeline to see my entire 6 minute project. However, when zoomed in, the black frames never appear..
Sorry to bring this up again, but I thought this information might be helpful to find a solution.

Are these black frames on the timeline??
Make sure that you have the latest drivers for your video card.

The black frames, as far as I know, are not present on the timeline. I can only see them when playing the video or rendering it. I have no idea how zooming out of the timeline affects the video, but who knows.. I’ll also try new drivers.
Of course, this doesn’t really matter anymore because now my entire timeline is bugged up (posted a new thread for that subject).

Jesse, just a question of your hardware. You are putting all your files on a separate drive from the OS/Program, correct? Do you have lots of free hard drive space on your OS drive and Vegas drive? And what amount of RAM do you have in your machine? Do you know the speed of your hard drive(s)? Since you are relatively new to editing, there is some fundamentals that are worth validating before assuming that Vegas itself is the root cause, like disk space, RAM etc.
But you did upgrade to the latest version of Vegas, correct? You did make sure your video drivers for your computer are up to date? Any major upgrades you’ve done since this problem started happening? Like adding a new video card? Sometimes the video cards have older software in the box and need to be upgraded almost immediately, for example.

I am not putting my video files on a seperate drive, just C:. Could this be causing my problem?
As for hardware, i’ve got about 700 GB left on my terabyte drive, 4 GB of ram, Quadcore processor, etc. It’s a relatively new computer, and I’ve had no upgrades since I started Vegas.

Jesse, I wouldn’t worry about your machine, as I run a Samsung laptop with about the same specs for use when traveling with Vegas. However, I do experience odd playback issues with it, and sort of assume it’s the use of the C drive. To isolate the issue, try moving some footage to an eSata or fast internal drive if this is a desktop machine. It would be a cheap fix. USB doesn’t seem to work well, IMHO. I bought an eSata doc, and my footage is kept on that. Playback of HD footage with Vegas seems to be a problem in general, and I’ve gotten use to it not playing back properly. I don’t experience this on FCP, (I use both platforms for various projects). I think that Vegas has a problem they need to address, maybe it’s time for them to offload video processing better, just not sure that your issue is part of it. There could be something else going on. I’m sort of hoping to see some kind of upgrade by Sony that would address this issue of playback stuttering. I’ve optimized as best I can, and still get it. But I don’t get black screen like you describe.

Thanks for the information, i’ll try to switch to an secondary internal drive as soon as I can. For now i’m just going to render the project in pieces, then combine them and render them again.

Hi Alf,
Forgive this OT post, but I noticed that you made some comments re your laptop and HD playback.
I have some very specific queries relating to this as I will be on location for some months and need a laptop for HD editing. I have been doing a bunch of research but could use some experienced input. Could I contact you directly with a couple of queries? Or is this “not done”?
