You should be able to do a “Save As” with the 3 minutes worth of footage on the timeline and tell it to trim media in the save as dialogue box. Also, once you have all the media on the timeline that you want to keep, click the lighting bolt button in the project media window. It will remove all files that are not in use on the timeline from the project. However, if your captured file is an hour long and you are using 30 seconds of it, the whole hour long captured footage will remain in the project media window.

Hi,
I have lots of clips which I am putting together to make a promo movie for my company, so I just shot footage of everything and am just picking snips from here and there. But if it a 6 minute clip it all stays on the storyboard when i only need 5 secs of it if you see what i mean, i’ll try what you mentioned and let you know how i go.

Maybe I am misunderstanding. You are splitting your events (what you termed clips) on the timeline yes? Find a section you want to keep and push the “s” key on the keyboard to “slice” the footage at that point. Then “s” again when you have found the end of that part of the event. You can then click the rest of the event (if you are done with it and don’t want anymore portions of it) and press delete. The captured media will still be in your project media but it will not be on your timeline.

Maybe that is what you were talking about?

Vegas is a non-destructive editing system. When you import clips into the timeline, you are inserting references to the portions of the files you are using, the original files are not harmed in any way. Now, if for some reason you only want to have a file of your “selected” clips, then render the project out as an avi file, you will then have a file of just the selected portions of the original footage (plus any changes you made to it, i.e. color correction, transitions…).

Hey, I had a similar thing. My Vegas Pro 9.0 32bit on XP, then updated to 9.0c, stopped responding during editing or hung at 0% while rendering, with remaining time growing and growing to hours. Made my hair gray, dammit(:
I followed advice from some forums and opened preferences. There I changed number of rendering threads to 1 and disabled BOP rendering. Also defragmented the disk and ensured that pre-rendering files are stored on a drive with ample space. This might have helped to solved the problem, but wasn’t enough.
As many people with this problem report they found the solution in deleting some of the tracks or purging the unused ones (using the yellow flash button on the Project Media tab), I tried to go this way and it worked, hoorraaaay(: Some media files can be defective and prevent your work from being rendered. Such a file can be defective in this sense even if you can play or preview it no problem. What worked for me was disabling effects such as Sound Mixer or Vibrato on one of the audio tracks.

Another solution people report to be working is switching to Vegas 8 or Vegas 9 64bit.
