Sony Vegas Pro 9 ?
Posted by Rico Barone on August 21, 2008 at 7:50 pmHi Everyone,
I’ve scoured the Internet and this forum and I know others have asked if Pro 9 will be released soon. DSE stated not anytime soon, and another poster stated that Pro 9 ‘will turn heads’.
Does anyone know if there is an upcoming release? I am trying to decide between Vegas Pro or Premiere Pro. Currently I’m using Movie Studio 8 Platinum and like the speed and the fact it is easy on system resources.
I’ve also scoured the Internet and read the debates on Vegas vs. Premiere Pro and it seems to boil down to personal opinion, although there is a consensus that Vegas it easier on the system.
If anyone wants to shed some personal experience on the following combinations of products, I would me much appreciative:
Sony Vegas Pro + Boris Red
Sony Vegas Pro + Adobe AE
Premiere Pro + either of the above effects/titlers.Thanks,
Rico.

August 22, 2008 at 12:37 amDon’t stress yourself Rico,
Purchasing Sony vegas Pro 8 now is a solid investment…doesn’t
make sense to sit and wait and ponder over vegas 9. It will reach
when it is it’s time.Personally i don’t use either Boris nor After effects (years in this field teaches me to use the tools that i am comfortable with and great
at using, not necessarily the tools that everyone else is making
a big deal over). So it is “Sony Vegas” + “Autodesk Combustion” for
me.Steve Rhoden

August 22, 2008 at 11:47 amWell, personally, I edit AVCHD and Vegas can handle it natively, so CS3 isn’t really a good option for me. In regard to Vegas 9 Pro, I am greatly looking forward to it, meanwhile however, I am getting along with Movie Studio 9 Platinum Pro Pack (gotta love their short names) as when 9 Pro comes out my software cost will basically let me upgrade for $100 off, so I haven’t wasted ANY money.
For the time being I will have limited tracks and my output options are more limited (in terms of 264) but other than that I can just live with the limitations.
RUMORS: I was *told* unnofficially by some guy in support (who I’m sure doesn’t REALLY know) that their release date for 9 Pro is October. Whether they hit that or push it out to Q1 of next year or later has yet to be seen. I was also told that the 64bit code was giving them a little trouble, hence the date push back.

August 25, 2008 at 4:21 amHi Steve and Tony,
Thank you so much for taking the time to respond. I was tempted to purchase Movie Studio 9 Pro Pack for now but have read a few other posters are having problems with memory.
Steve, I hate to purchase Pro 8 and then 2 months from now 9 may be released and I have to shell out more $$$. I really don’t need 8 at this precise moment but am willing to wait a couple of months. If 9 won’t be released for another 6 months, then it may be 8 Pro.
Rico.

August 25, 2008 at 4:33 amJust to be clear, and to quell any rumors…Vegas Pro 9 is no chance, no how, no way, not gonna happen….in the next “two months or so.”
Most of the Vegas 9 problems people are having with the movie studio product are related to specific machine configs. As a general rule, the memory issue is a non-issue.

September 2, 2008 at 5:29 pmWell,
I ended up purchasing the Sony Vegas Movie Studio 9 Platinum Pro Pack upgrade from Sony Creative. I think it was a great price and I’m happy that I can export in H.264. The Cinescore software is pretty cool too.
I think this will hold me over for a while.
Cheers,
Rico.

January 6, 2009 at 4:16 pmHello Brian,
First, it’s important you do not confuse the software titles. You wrote “when you bought the vegas pro 9 expansion pack”. ‘Vegas Pro’ is an entirely different package and I don’t even think Version 9 is released yet. I think only 8 is out there right now.
What I think you are talking about is ‘Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 9’, and this is the version that I purchased.
You also wrote “I have vegas studio 8.0 and I need to be able to do HD video, which 8 cannot”, which is not a true statement. Vegas Movie studio 8 *can* do ‘HD’ video (which I believe you mean HDV or ‘High Definition Video’). It just does not have the ability to encode (or export) in h.264. I also believe version 9 has added more support for camcorders which record in AVCHD format.
Now, the only thing I have used h.264 for is to encode movies for posting online to a website called Vimeo. Vegas Movie Studio does not make it readily apparent to export in h.264, and as a result, I followed the instructions kindly provided by Eugenia Loli which can be found on this page:
https://eugenia.gnomefiles.org/2007/11/09/exporting-with-vegas-for-vimeo-hd/
and specifically, these are the instructions for using the Sony AVC codec (which results in the h.264 mp4 file):

Hope this helps.

January 6, 2009 at 7:38 pm> Vegas Movie Studio 8.0c, which I have, _cannot_ export Video in resolutions above 800×600, and doesn’t make use of the AVC or h.264 codecs, nor export in High-Def.
I believe the confusion over what 8.0 can do vs what 9.0 can do is because you are talking about two different sub-versions. This is a common confusion so let’s clarify:
Movie Studio 6.0 Platinum and Movie Studio 7.0 Platinum and Movie Studio 8 Platinum and Movie Studio 9 Platinum can ALL edit and render HD. It’s the Platinum in the name that adds the HD support not the 8.0 or 9.0. (although at one point it was only HDV and now it supports AVCHD but you get the idea)
Movie Studio 6, 7, 8 including Movie Studio 9 CANNOT edit or render HD or 5.1 Surround. They are only SD/DV editors. So Platinum = HD… no Platinum = SD only.
Pro Pak is a misnomer. There is nothing “pro” about it. It contains the consumer versions of Sound Forge Audio Studio, Cinescore, and some 3rd part FX from New Blue FX. The software itself is the same consumer version that you could buy separately with no additional functionality. It is just a software “bundle”.
It is unfortunate that the Sony marketing team doesn’t understand the confusion that they are causing by distinguishing the “Pro” version of Vegas with the name Vegas Pro and then adding the word “Pro” to their consumer line of software but they did it. Personally, I feel they should have called it “Suite” because it combines several non-pro versions of their software together. (but I was not consulted on this matter) 😉
Hope that clears things up about versions and platinums and pros (Oh My!).

January 7, 2009 at 5:42 pmHello Brian,
I launched my Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 9 for you and selected a clip to render.
If I choose the Mainconcept AVC codec, I am only permitted to export in 320×240 or 640×480 (both options being listed as Apple ipod). I am *not* able to select the ‘Custom…’ button (it is disabled) in order to modify the settings.
With the Sony AVC codec, the ‘Custom…’ button is enabled which allows you to configure the render using the different audio and video types including 1440×1080 and 1920×1080.
If you intend on using the Mainconcept codec then I would say the answer to your question is ‘you have to purchase the Vegas Pro version’.
I hope this information helps.
Rico.

March 21, 2009 at 10:25 amYes, the latest version for the pro version of Vegas is still 8.0c and 8.1. The Movie Studio version has reached version 9, available in different flavours. Just check the Sony website for more details about the different versions.
