    Hi,

First off, specs pc and laptop:

    PC:

    i7 860
4GB of DDR3 RAM, dual channel.
GPU rendering is turned off but: Radeon HD 5850

    Laptop:

    Intel Pentium T4500
    3GB DDR2 RAM
GPU rendering also turned off: ATI mobility radeon HD 4330

The project/render settings do not matter in this case, it concerns several different projects and for testing the exact same project and render settings were used on both laptop and pc.

Now for the problem: I’ve been trying to render several (small, 1-2 minute, not alot of videofx) projects on my pc and not one has completed succesfully. I can best describe what happens by displaying the test results. I took the exact same project (1440×1080, 25 fps, 1.10 minute, EXACT same render settings) on my PC and laptop and started rendering it at the same time.

    – The laptop was done in 20 minutes, RAM usage for laptop stayed around 2.1-2.3GB used, CPU usage started at 100% and stayed 98-99-100%.
    – By the time the laptop was done the pc was only at 30%, RAM usage started around 2.5 and slowly worked it’s way up to full 3.9GB, CPU usage varied from 10%-30%, sometimes peaking at 90% in 1 or 2 of the cores. By the time the pc got to full ram usage it became unuseable and the rendering had (gradually) slowed down to about 1%/hour (understandibly I cancelled the render).

Can anyone shed some light on this issue? Any ideas/suggestions? It would be much appreciated.

One thing you can check is your Dynamic RAM on the video tab of the properties page. If this is a high number (>512) this can choke your system. Set it to 16 or 32 and give it a try.

Jeroen. First off, I’m making some assumptions, as your technical specs aren’t complete, and neither is your technical specs filled out in your profile. It helps to be complete. Why? Because I could assume you are running either 64 bit or 32 bit Vegas. Or 32 or 64 bit Windows. I can’t even tell if you are running Windows 7 or XP, or even Linux with a Windows emulator.

You also don’t mention whether you tried other settings, such as rendering to ‘standard’ rendering targets, such as 1920×1080 or 1280×720, or even SD. Do any of these work, or does this clip fail with all of your rendering targets?

For 64 bit Windows 7, your memory is minimalistic for video work. I highly recommend you boost to at least 6 GBs of RAM and more likely to 8.

Also do you have enough disk space on the drive you are rendering to? I always render to a separate 1 TB drive that is about half full, it’s a Sata drive inside my desktop. On my laptop, for remote work, I now have both an eSata drive that contains my footage, and a USB 3.0 drive that is where I render to.

Do not render to your OS drive. Nor to a drive that is almost full.

Try these and let us know. And also please fill out your technical specs on your profile page for future faster troubleshooting.

    Thanks! Happy shooting! Happier rendering!

    Hi Jeff,

Thank you for your response, I found the same suggestion on the Vegas forums, tried 16-32-50 (Vegas default was set at 200) but none of these helped the rendering speed/jam issue.

Thank you for your response Al,

I’m sorry for my incomplete tech specs. I’m running W7 64bit and I’m not looking for ultra fast renders but I would assume that this Pc should be alot faster than a 3gig ram laptop also running W7 64..

I tried rendering to the default sony 720p format, the default internet 720p format and tried rendering to the exact same settings as the source media > none of these settings made any difference.

There is about 150Gb free on the disk I am rendering to, it’s my OS drive. Why should I not render to this drive? I have another one installed so I could use that, will give it a try.

I tried alot of things today, even did a clean install of windows on a seperate hard drive but even that didn’t help the rendering speed compared to my (crappy) laptop. I’m starting to think it’s a hardware issue and will run some diagnostic tests tonight.

    Thanks for your help!

Thanks. That helps a bit. Not sure about why the render to the OS drive would not complete, but do try rendering out to a separate drive, any drive. Once you can complete it, you can then decide what’s faster.

There are a lot of factors affecting speed, beyond the internals of Vegas. While I’m not saying that it isn’t Vegas, you need to make sure you can create similar results on similar machines, then focus on speed.

Since you are on Win 64, and I assume you have properly downloaded Vegas 64 bit on both machines (this isn’t a sure thing, as the default download usually is 32 bit! I’ve made this mistake once myself).

After putting both machines renders out to external drives, look at the actual settings of the exact same render templates on both machines. Something might be off there. Some setting. With all the discussion about altering the templates for best rendering, if you have been messing with these at all you could have screwed something up. I have before!
