Sony Vegas – optimized settings
I have been using Sony Vegas for sometime, I have bought a new PC a month ago, but I don’t see as much performance gain in preview, as I expected (rarely work with res as high as 720p/. I don’t think it’s normal with a PC like mine a little change in video to create stutter in Preview quality – half size (320×240 30-50FPS, the video is Video WMV 3 codec 1600kbps overall bitrate , format VC-1, 25FPS; audio – WMV2 48kHz at 128kbps). It might be normal, but it might be problems with the Video Preferences. Can you help me find the best settings?
My PC:
Phenom II x6 1090T 3,6GHz
A-data DDR3-1600 7-7-7-20 2x2GB
HD5850 1GBAnd Sony Vegas 9.0e Pro x64. D. RAM preview is set to 1530MB /max possible is 3GB/ and rendering threads – 16. I’m not sure witch settings affect performance, so tell me if you need more info about the preferences.
Also, I’m planing to buy 4 more HDDs (after I add another RAM kit) and make 2xRAID 0 + 2xRAID 0 and then put the couples in RAID 1, because I can’t afford to lose information. Will the RAID 0 give a boost or 7200RPM 32MB cache HDD has enough read bandwidth (considering that I use one for OS and another for storage)?
PS I forgot, I’m on Win7 x64.

Hiya.
If you’re having preview lag, just go to
Options ->> Preferences ->> Video tab ->> Dyamic RAM Preview [First listed] and adjust this to ither 256 or 512. Experiment to see which is best for your PC! Note: Going higher than recommended is fine, but bear in mind the memory you allocate to the preview takes away from the total allowance Sony Vegas has for all other processes, as well… and going too high will lag everything, AND the preview on top of that.I’m sorry if this isn’t helpful, but I’m super new to Sony Vegas myself… I’m only responding since nobody else has, and I know the frustration of waiting around. >.<

Thanks a lot. I’ve lowered it to 500MB. Now with two video tracks and the top one on 37% opacity previews a lot better, but it needs a little more for smooth playback. BTW my processor’s cores are around 10-20% while I’m previewing and the RAM is about 25% to Vegas. What is holding it back, it has a lot of resources free?

Hm, I don’t know. :/ Are you using Preview (Auto)? Try that. That should help you smooth it out. Do not worry about Best or Good. I’ve found that the only use for them is if you have the video paused, as it sharpens the still image close to how it’ll render… Regardless, the preview window never seems to show the actual quality, no matter what you do. It always turns out better, for me.
But again… I’ve done.. like 1 main project, and a few tests… so I really don’t know a lot. I’ve not had it long.

In my first post I said I’m on Preview Auto, which in my case is “half size 360x240x32 50p”. Thanks anyway.
