Sony Vegas on Macbook
I’ve been using Sony Vegas 9 on the same HP desktop for several years. I recently upgraded and finally finding my PC simply isn’t keeping up. I’m debating migrating to Apple-land and I’m trying to decide if I should go with an iMac or a Macbook. I’ve read numerous forums and don’t have performance concerns with running Vegas in Bootcamp or using Fusion/VBox.
But I would like feedback from others who do heavy video editing on Macbooks on the longevity of the laptop? Will the rendering of video lead to a shorter lifespan on a Macbook (due to heat, etc.)?

While I edit in Vegas Pro on my Mid-2012 MacBook Pro 2.3 Ghz Core i7, 16GB memory, 1TB SSD without any problem of overheating I don’t do a lot of rendering with it. I mostly render my projects on my 6-core PC Workstation or my 8-core 2008 Mac Pro. I have done some intense renders on it with Final Cut Pro X and it seems to hold up well to long renders on Mac OS X.
The key to keeping a MacBook Pro cool is keeping it on a hard surface. The aluminum case is part of the cooling system and covering it or keeping it on cloth or any insulator will not allow it to dissipate heat properly. I keep mine on a wood desk and have no problems but I do feel it running hotter after a while if I use it on a rug, bed, or pillow.

Thanks, John. That’s useful info and consistent with what I’ve been seeing in other comments/forums. My video editing usage is more than hobbyist, but I don’t do it for a living. As much as I would like to shoot and edit fuller length videos, movies, etc., my focus will be on producing videos between 5 and 15 minutes. I keep debating what to purchase based on this. Everything has it’s merits. I would really like to get a Macbook Pro, but concerned about rendering speeds on the slower CPU compared to the iMac or a beefed up PC. I have little interest in learning new software so I want to continue using Vegas and I will want to do so using Fusion or VBox so that’s another concern I have with performance. But, knowing I won’t wear out the laptop with the rendering might be enough to push me toward the Macbook.

Here is the tie-breaker for me:
Fact: You can run Windows software on a Mac
Fact: You cannot run Mac software on a Windows PC (not legally)
Solution: Buy a Mac and get the best of both worlds. 😉
