    Hi guys,

I have recently edited a school play that runs for 1 hour 45 minutes. The edit was straight forward (just two cameras cutting from one to the other). I rendered it the in Vegas under Main Concept MPEG2 setting for DVD, and of course the audio as an ac3 file. Did it this way before and it worked fine. Unfortunately, the file comes in just over the 4.7GB limit for DVD (the MPEG2 video file comes in at 4.6GB and the audio file as 200MB). When I bring this into DVD Architect, it comes up in the bottom right corner in red “Disc Space Used: 5.2GB”.

So I decided to render it in the normal Main Concept MPEG1 format and when rendered the file comes in at 1.6GB. This leads me to think that when I bring the 1.6Gb video mpg file and the 200MB ac3 file into DVD Architect that it should fit a disc no problem. However, when I insert the media into DVDA, at the bottom right corner it comes up in red “Disc Space Used: 6.8GB”. How is this possible??

There must be something up or is it the length of the project that is causing the problem?

Is there anyway that I can try and fit this onto a DVD through DVD Architect?

That’s because MPEG1 is not a valid DVD format so DVD Architect is going to re-render it to MPEG2 before it can make the DVD.

You should re-render to MPEG2 using a lower bit-rate. Use one of the many bit-rate calculators on the Internet to determine what bit-rate to use. According to the bit-rate calculator in VASST Ultimate S Pro, you should use 5,400,000 as the average bit-rate to fit 1:45:00 on a 4.7GB DVD-5

BTW, MPEG1 is a dinosaur format that no one should ever use again (unless you are making a VCD or need compatibility with Windows 98). Just don’t use it for any serious work.

DVD Architect has a long history of incorrectly reporting file sizes.
If you know that you’re under the limit (which you definitely are), then ignore the warning and proceed as normal.

The other issue that concerns me is quality.
If you want the best, then render it again out of Vegas using the following custom VBR numbers. Do it in 2-pass mode, make sure the Quality slider is set to maximum (31?) and the DVD will be as good as Vegas and DVDA can make it.
    9,440,000 / 5,392,000 / 3,232,000

I like DVD Architect, but i don’t use it all the time,
Most of my DVD Encoding tasks goes to ConvertXtoDVD with
    never a hiccup.

Mr Patrick McKenna, i had the same problem bt now itz solved, after you have created the full project in DVD Architect and if the final file size exceeds 4.7GB , Click File>Optimise Disk>Fit To Disk ( you’ll find this on the lower right of the page), Hope this solves your problem.

    Thanks 🙂
