    Hello,
I have experienced a problem with importing video I have downloaded from YouTube using ‘YouTube Downloader HD’ program. I downloaded it as AVI HD (720p)

I downloaded a video which I wanted to edit using Sony Vegas Pro 8,

I tried to import it, it howed up in the ‘Explorer’ menu, but when I tried to drag it into the timeline it said this message

    Rule #1.
Make sure you’re running the latest version of your software.
Vegas Pro 8 is at 8.0c so download and install it and see if you still have problems.

    Rule #2.
Never install a codec pack as they can install all kinds of garbage that you don’t need and can end harm doing more harm than good.
Only download what you need to get the job done.

You also might want to transcode YouTube video into something easier to edit. Use a tool like Avidemux 2.5 to convert the video to MJPEG, Lagarith, Huffyuv, or some other easily editable format.

When I reformatted my laptop (Vista 32 Business) I lost sound on some people’s DVD’s. I searched for the specific codec, but could not find it. In the end I installed the smallest K-lite codec pack, and chose ‘essentials only’ (four items, it said). I got sound back on the DVD’s, but did I probably also install some garbage? And how can I avoid this in the future?

I use the laptop mostly for testing, and maybe making thumbnails and such, but I don’t want to install any garbage, if it can be avoided (because that is probably why I had to reformat my laptop to begin with).

    Thanks.

Of all the codec packs, the K-Lite pack is probably the best because it gives you levels of choice but I have never installed a codec pack. I just use GSpot or some other tool to tell me which codecs a file needs and then I download only those codecs and install them. It takes a little work but it keeps things cleaner.

The problem is that each codec registers itself to handle certain encoding and the last one you install wins for that encoding. For example, you may have paid a lot of money for your NLE and it came with a high quality MJPEG codec. Then you install a codec pack and it registers a free low quality MJPEG codec which unregisters your original one in order to register itself. Now you when you render to MJPEG, some cheap quality codec is being used by your expensive NLE and all of a sudden you can’t figure out why your videos look bad.

This is why it’s best to just install the codecs that you need, so that good codecs that you already have don’t get overlaid by bad ones.

OK, so in the future I should use GSpot.

For right now, would it correct any potential problems if I uninstall and then reinstall Vegas on my laptop?

If you installed the Basic K-Lite codec pack then you might be OK. It only installs the Haali, MP4, & FLV directshow splitters. Some of the other packs install their own AVCHD filters which could conflict with Vegas but I don’t think anything in the Basic pack would. Re-installing Vegas might be a good idea just as a precaution. I’m not sure how the Basic pack fixed a DVD playback problem because you probably needed an AC3 codec or something which this pack doesn’t have (the DVD codecs are in the Standard pack).

Where are the codecs typically installed? Can you remove individual codecs, or do you need to remove an entire ‘pac’. If you remove an inferior MJPEG codec that was installed (for instance) over a better codec will the system reverdst to the better codec?
    Thanks for any knowledgeable answers.

Get a copy of GSpot and go to System | List Codecs and Other Filters and you’ll see everything that is installed on your system. You can even right-click and unregister individual codecs and DirectX filters. Be careful and back up your system before you start playing with this.

I’m having the exact same problem that Levi-Jade had in the original post, and I’d downloaded Gspot but am a bit confused on what to do now. I’ve reinstalled Vegas but I don’t know how to disable codecs or even how to know which codecs to disable. Levi-Jade, if you read this, could you give me extremely detailed instructions on what you did to correct this issue? Thank you.
