What about the Avid DNxHD codecs? Someone on these boards advised they were good intermediate codecs, nearly lossless, so I successfully was encoding to the 175 setting…that is until this morning, now I get the dreaded “An error occurred while converting with a codec.”

Avid DNxHD is a great intermediary codec.

While you are getting the same error as the title of this thread… this thread turned out to be primarily about AVI codec paks and the problems they could cause. Since AVI codec paks don’t affect MOV files, this is probably not your problem.

I would start a new thread and explain exactly what you have been doing that no longer works.

    Hello!

Please help me understand what codec SV needs to open an .avi file with these settings (mediainfo)and how to install it.

    The error looks like this

I have just installed XP, and then SV. I read thousands of times that is not right to install any codec packs because SV already has its codecs. I don’t know why I have problems with this .avi file.

    Thank you,
    Ellen

You problem is that the AVI contains a codec that Vegas Pro is not expecting. It is MPEG4 (AVC/H.264) and usually MPEG4 is found in an MP4 container not an AVI container. You can download the x264vfw codec and it should allow you to view the file.

I have installed it and nothing changed. Same problem. I didn’t know what else to do so I have installed win 7 and a codec pack for it and now it’s ok. Don’t really know how that solved the problem, was like a miracle after trying so many solutions with no luck.
Thank you very much anyway ^_^

You probably didn’t install the correct version (32bit vs 64bit) for your version of Vegas Pro. While the codec pack may have solved this problem, it may also have created more problems that will plague you in the future. You should never install codec pack on a video editing computer. Good luck.

Everytime I install a fresh copy of Win7 [or watever version of windows] Sony Vegas doesn’t want to open certain files.

My pc has a 64 bit OS. I installed x264vfw.2273kMod.x86_64 and it didn’t solve the problem 🙁
I also didn’t want that codec pack [windows.7.codec.pack.v4.0.9.setup] I’ll try to learn more about codecs in future so these annoying errors won’t blow my mind anymore.

    Thank you,
    Ellen

MPEG4 should not be in an AVI container. This is part of your problem. The only codecs I know of that do this are DivX, Xvid, and x265vfw.

Where are you getting these files from?

This solved my problem! Thanks so much for the direction to the codec.

I was having the same problem with Movie Studio Platinum choking on a codec in an AVI file; and I downloaded this codec and it works fine now!

I was ALSO having incredible difficulty converting the file: I tried several video converters and spent a few hours of computer time waiting for various conversions, but nothing worked.

With this code I can simply open the file normally … Thanks so much for that help!
