  • Sony Vegas Crashing, Likely Because I got 166 Text Medias on The Timeline?

Hello, my name’s Matti, I’ve worked with Sony Vegas extensively for 4 years now, but a recent project is nagging me:

So, I’m working on a video me and my friend recorded a couple of days ago, and have decided to add captions to emphasize on comedic relief, and as I’ve reached 150 text medias on the timeline, Sony Vegas has started crashing every 10-20 minutes. I’ve never had a problem like this before. Also, the circumstances of the crashes are random, yet it’s always the same “Sony Vegas has stopped responding”.

I’m using Windows 7 64 Bit on my laptop – An HP with an AMD Athlon II P320 2.1 GHz dual core, 4GB’s of RAM and an AMD 545V Graphics Card. All drivers are up to date, and the machine generally works just the way it should.

IS this the reason? If yes, then what should I do about it? If no, then what could it be? Thank you for your time.

150 instances of generated text shouldn’t be a problem. I’ve done at least that many. How much hard-disk space do you have available? If your “C” drive and or your project drive is getting full, then I would look at getting a larger HDD or cleaning up your current drives.

Your project disk should have 2X your source media size in free space. Your “C” drive is where Windows puts the TEMP folder which Vegas uses a lot. I recommend at least 1X your source media size free on the “C” drive.

Also, for no particular reason, uncheck the default “Close media files when not the active application” in the preferences tab.

If you fix the problem, please report back as to what you did.

What Stephen said… and also, check your memory use during this. Most causes for flakey behavior are resource edge conditions: Vegas running out of disc space or memory, but not realizing it.

I agree that 150 text events isn’t much of a big deal, but it could depend on the number of fonts and other things Vegas has decided it must keep open, in RAM, all at once. Also, check your RAM Preview setting… that could contribute, since that memory is statically allocated and not available for other things during editing.

I have worked on it for a couple of days now, and reached 300 text events without crashing a single time. I believe the reason is I cleaned up my harddrive, uninstalled some games and such to free up some space. Seems to do the trick! Thank you very much!
