I have a JVC Everio video camera connected to my computer via USB. The camera saves files with a native extension of “MOD.” When I had windows XP, I was able to rename the extension to AVI, then import it into Vegas uneventfully and edit, no problem. Recently, I upgraded to Windows Vista and Sony Vegas 8 Pro. Now, when I change the extension to AVI and import the video, oonly the video track comes in, no audio track. What gives? Any ideas. Why isn’t the audio track coming in? I appreciate your time and please respond.

Whenever either the audio or video doesn’t show up on the timeline it is usually an indication that you don’t have the proper codec on your system to decode the data stream. Get a copy of GSpot and drop the AVI file into it and it will tell you what audio and video codecs the file needs and whether or not they are installed on your system. Then go fine any audio codecs that are missing and install them.

Man, I hate to bug you so much, but man, I thought I had it for a second but it didn’t work, it says the codecs are already installed… Can you walk me through it?

What does GSpot say the audio codec is? Perhaps it’s a format that Vegas Pro 8 doesn’t support. Just because you have the codec doesn’t man that Vegas can support it. There are some types that it just can’t edit.

It says that it has the audio codecs but I just don’t know what to do. Any ideas?

What audio codec does GSpot say the file is using? Perhaps it’s a codec that Vegas can’t edit.

It says that it’s using AC3. Can Vegas 8 support that? If not, how do I change it?

Normally no. Vegas won’t allow you to drop a file with AC3 onto the timeline. You could look for a free AC3 to WAV converter and process the audio separately. You could also try a converter program like Super(c) and have it just process the audio.
