Sony Vegas 8 doesn’t open MP4 files
Posted by Bia Berrish on February 4, 2011 at 12:53 pmHi. 🙂
I have Sony Vegas 8.0c version installed on my Windows 7 OP. The problem is that from what i can see vegas opens only avi files. I want to open a mp4 video but i can’t. The file has the next format:
H.264, 1280×720, Millions AAC, Stereo (L R), 48.000kHz and the movie FPS is -129.42. ( I just copied what QuickTime player told me :D)
I have a lot of codecs installed but it’s seem they don’t work. My current version of Quick Time is 7.6.
I have K-lite Codec Pack 6.7.0 Standard, ffdshow, haali media splitter, lagarith lossless codec , MPEG2 codec and xvid (as you can see A LOT)
Please help me resolve this problem. If you need any more information I will reedit my post.
Thank you very much.John Rofrano replied 15 years, 3 months ago 4 Members · 9 Replies -

February 4, 2011 at 6:48 pmk-lite codec pack can cause problems with Vegas as it can overwrite some of the quality codecs included within Vegas with cheaper, less quality alternatives. It, as well as other codec packs, can “break” codecs and cause problems. You may want to do a clean install…
In regards to your file, 129.42fps is a lot of frames per second. Are you doing some sort of slow motion capture? If not, this is probably wrong. Download gspot and tell us the results when you drag your video file over top of it.

February 4, 2011 at 7:51 pmactually i have already done that xD
and when i drag it it says codec status undetermined.
and the footage is downloaded from the internet (i know it’s not that good but i don’t have other option)
today i’ve searched the net (again) and i’ve found another codec for x264 files. i have installed it and now vegas opens the file but i see only the audio. i know people had had this problem so i’ll search for those threats. maybe i’ll manage to solve it now.
thank you for your promt reply. 🙂 -

February 5, 2011 at 10:05 pmYou might have to convert the MP4 file outside of Vegas to something that is easier to edit. Especially if GSpot thinks it’s some unknown internet video format. I would recommend converting the video to Motion JPEG (MJPEG) with PCM audio. There are free converters like MPEG Splistream and AviDemux that can do this for you.
I must reiterate what Jeremy said. It will be a miracle if you can edit anything on your PC with all those codec-pacs installed.

February 6, 2011 at 12:43 pmI tried to avoid converting the files since that would mean quality loss. I’ll try to solve it some other way xD
But I have some other questions related to codecs and sony. Do you think that installing vegas 9 or 10 is a better option than 8? I heard that vegas 9 handles mp4 files better but i don’t know what to belive. And if it doesn’t help having so many codecs installed which ones should i uninstall?

Well if you are concerned about quality one solution is to not edit highly compressed h.264 footage from the internet. 😉 You could also convert it to a lossless codec like Lagarith or Huffyuv. These files will be bigger but will not incur any loss.

Vegas Pro 10 handles mp4 file much better than either 8 or 9. Sony has improved h.264 support with each release.
[Bia Berrish] “And if it doesn’t help having so many codecs installed which ones should i uninstall?”
I would start by uninstalling the codec paks. But sometimes they do not uninstall cleanly and the only way to rid yourself of the damage they have caused is to re-install Windows.

February 15, 2011 at 6:58 pmI’m having a similar problem. Using Vegas 8 (on a 64-bit XP machine). I need to overlay two videos captured in H.264 by Drift Innovations HD170 cameras at 720p resolution. Vegas sees the videos and loads them, and shows correct file info, but they only come up black. Quicktime views the videos no problem.
I’ve used GSpot to check my codec status and it returns “Codec Status Undetermined” !!??
Any help would be very much appreciated.

It looks like there are problems with the codec that the Drift Innovations camera uses. You might need to convert it outside of Vegas to another format that Vegas can read. I would recommend converting to an AVI file with the Motion-JPEG codec and uncompressed PCM audio. Try a tool like AviDemux to do the conversion.

March 5, 2011 at 3:50 pmHI! i’ve come back with another problem and i’m posting on this thread since i made it 😀 my old problem hasn’t been solved but i’ve downloaded sony vegas 10 and if this doesn’t work then i;ll think about doing a clean install.
Well noe the problem is that when i open an avi file in HD in sony vegas, the preview window shows an incredible low-quality file. it’s pixelated and ugly like it’s a very low-quality file (and it’s not!). What could be the problem here? 😀

What do you have the preview set to? I keep mine at Preview (Auto). Also don’t make the preview window too small. Try changing the physical size of the window layout and see if the video starts looking better.
