Sony Vegas 12 Pro Codec Error?
Ok, so I have Sony Vegas 12 Pro, Windows 7 (64 bit), and my computer is a Gateway. Just thought it would be good to get all that out there to begin with.
Anyways, to make this as simple as possible, Sony Vegas will not open certain video files due to some kind of “codec error”. I can’t drag them to the timeline or anything, they don’t even open; a window with an error message just pops up telling me that there the problem could be codec-related.
When I right click the video and go to “properties” it tells me the video files are avi. Now from what I understand SV is supposed to support avi. files.
I know next to nothing about codecs or how to find out what codecs are involved with certain videos. I guess my question is: what codecs does Sony Vegas 12 pro support? and how do I fix the videos that don’t work?

I don’t know if you can infer anything from that, but I hope it helps.
Also, the videos work on the other video editting program I have (Roxio Creator 2011), however, it’s no where near as advanced as Vegas.

First – DO NOT EVER install a codec pack on your editing PC. They are for gaming and the codecs are inferior to those that are installed with Vegas.
Run the program through mediainfo (https://mediainfo.sourceforge.net/en), this will tell you what codec is missing.
I wasn’t going to download a 300Mb file to look at the encoding, but the filesize for an hour of program tells me that the odds are the files were made using the DIVIX or XVID codecs, which are notoriously incompatible with Vegas. (They are actually crap and incompatible with a lot of editing programs, but that is just my opinion).

Thanks for the reply. I actually just found out about mediainfo and used to find out what codecs I needed.
Everything seems to be working fine with the exception of a little bit of lag, but I can deal with that for now.

Hello all,
I seem to have a similar problem using SVP – I was given some video files from a cctv system, that have a GAVC codec.
Try as I might I just cannot import them into SVP and at this stage I’m pulling out what hair I have left.

Managed to get the issue resolved in the end by sourcing a pc based program to play the files on my machine, then used a mix of virtualdub and wmm to encode them back out as avi.
Alls good now 🙂

I am really not trying to be an ass, but I find it funny that each time I search for a new reason, as I am told I shouldn’t install Codec packs, every time I have to install further crap that doesn’t work. Then when I am finally tired I try to install a codec pack and then it works. Once again sorry if I sound like an ass, but your solution didn’t work but installing a separate codec pack did…

A codec pack is a shotgun approach. You may quite likely fix your immediate problem. If you never need to use other codecs, and you don’t change your source formats, the go for it.
Quite often someone installs a codec pack to fix an immediate problem and months later when they get a new camera or files to edit from someone else, they discover that the codec pack broke the codec they now need.
