I’ve been online for hours for a solution to my capturing issue with Sony Vegas Pro 10 and a Sony HVR deck but nothing so far. I have the latest and greatest version of Sony Vegas, Pro 10 (e), build 738, 64-Bit. Specifically, I’m trying to capture HDV video (Canon XHA1) with a Sony HVR-15 deck. Vegas will recognize the HVR, plays and rewinds the tape, etc., but it won’t show me a preview and it won’t capture. The preview only shows blue. I don’t know what to do. I’ve lost so much time already that I think I’m just going to capture the video with the same Canon XHA1 that recorded the video, but this causes extra wear on my deck heads and is not a permanent or desired option. Any solutions out there. I’m so very stressed!

“…but this causes extra wear on my deck heads…”

Seriously – if you use your camera enough to wear out the heads, then you certainly have enough business to buy a new camera.

YOU SHOULD WISH for enough shooting hours for head wear to be a problem. Especially if you use your camera for income.

It just doesn’t happen in real use. If you have enough shooting projects to wear out the heads on a camera, then you have enough business to a) purchase a deck (or two), and b) have a supply closet with more cameras.

Heads wear out from abuse – not normal use. Mixing tape brands, excessive use of the cleaning tape (usually needed from mixing tape brands), and rarely, harsh environments. But it is exceedingly rare to find anyone who has experienced wearing out a tape head simply through normal useage. Even rental units. (Second-hand anecdotes don’t count here).

While we’re on it – NEVER, EVER use a cheap tape rewinder. Unlike a camera or deck tape transport that monitors the hub speed and slows down near the ends, cheap rewinders slam the tape at full speed and depend on the tension of the tape leader on the hub to keep it from coming unspooled. It will fail. Not might fail, it will, and you will have to rethread the tape on the spool. Not an easy task.

Now on to your capture problem.

Are you using the correct capture utility? There is two installed with Vegas. The internal capture is for DV and the external is for HDV. I can’t help you with the specifics because I haven’t captured a tape in a couple of years (tapeless now, yay!). And when I did, I used HdvSplit (it’s free and doesn’t do anything but capture tapes).

HDV decks and cameras offer downconvert from HDV to DV via 1394 – make sure the deck is set to “HDV” and not “DV” output, otherwise you will have deck control, but no video. Hope that solves the problem
