    Hi,
    I’m having a problem with the file size of my videos, I know that the files are that size for a reason and that the quality will be compromised if I were to compress the rendered file, however I have recently recorded a performance for an amateur dramatic society and they would like me to put it onto a DVD. Unfortunately however the first act (of 30 mins) is about 6.5Gb, which would make it highly illogical to try and fit the whole performance onto the 4.7Gb DVD.
    I am out of options, this would be a very enriching lesson and would also allow me to learn from the benefit of anyone’s help in case this problem occurs in the future. Thanks for reading, hope to hear from someone soon.

    You didn’t say what “Render As” template you used, but I’ll bet it wasn’t the MPEG2/DVDA template.

    Encoded filesize is determined by bitrate. Higher bitrate=larger file and higher quality.

    DVD’s require MPEG2 video and AC3 audio. Render your video to MainConcept MPEG2 with any of the DVD Architect … templates that match your location and videos aspect (NTSC or PAL and 4:3 or 16:9 Widescreen). Then render your audio as Dolby Digital AC3 with the Stereo DVD template. These are the files that you should use when authoring your DVD with DVD Architect.

    I do alot of this as I record my daughters dance studio shows and produce the DVDs for all the other parents. SHows are between 60 and 120 minutes. as others have said you need to render your project as a DVD Architect Video (and Audio) Stream (mpeg2 and AC3) files. The size of the file depend mainly on the bitrate you choose.

    When you do a “Render As”, Select the “MainConcepts MPEG-2” File Type, then Select the “DVD Architect NTSC Video Stream” (or which ever template you need to use). Now you then can go into the “custom” settings and adjust the bitrate. 6,500,000 will get 1hr and 30min onto a 4.7GB DVD.

    8,000,000 is pretty well ideal for a DVD, but you are down to around an 1hr 15min of video at that point. get down under 5,000,000 and the quality really sucks. around 1hr 45min I start thinking about a 2 dvd set. I have had very little ‘luck’ with DLDVDs (8.5gb).

    For shows under 70 minutes, a CBR of 8,000,0000 is OK.

    For shows exceeding 70 minutes, you show be looking at 2 pass VBR, using Mark’s bit rate calculator to determine what your min, max and avg bit rate should be. Taking a guess at what the CBR settings should be will not yield the best results. Search this forum for 2 pass variable bit rendering or Mark’s bit rate calculator to take the guess work out. The calculator can also just use CBR settings, but with 2 pass VBR, you get better results.

    Let’s say you’re trying to fit 2 hours on a disc, this would require a bitrate of about 4.7Mbits/sec. If you used a CBR of 4.7Mbps, then the high motion areas would be starved for bits and display compression artifacts and the low motion areas would have too many bits and would be wasted. VBR intelligently allocates the bits to maintain video quality. The first pass of a 2-pass VBR reads the program and calculates how to allocate the available bits during the second pass. It allocates more bits to high motion sections and fewer bits to low motion areas in order to maintain the average bitrate which you have set.

    The only downside of 2 pass VBR is the time penalty added to the render process (typically takes twice as long).

    Very true, I should have been more clear in my post. I use the BitRate Calculator to find what I should use for and average bit rate for the VBR. I also use the 2-pass, although it does double your rendering time…
