so i recently bought a copy of sony vegas 10 after putting gaming footage togeather for a project of mine the next day i went to open it and it takes on average 20minutes real time to open the project

now ive read around here and other websites about similar problems
my project contains almost 100gig of raw Fraps game footage but its quite anoyying having to wait 20minutes for my project to open, Not only that but while loading the project almost All of my RAM is being eaten up

    my specs:
    Windows7 64bit
    Intel Core 2 Quad CPU Q6600 @ 2.40GHz
    4gig DDR2 System RAM
    GTX 260 Gpu

i have a 64bit copy of sony vegas but while i open my project 3.90gig is constantly being used
and it seems to be using my hdd up as well because when i open my documents or open windowsmediaplayer or go to a website on the internet my whole pc seems to lagg terribly

so i was hoping someone knows a fix? Or to confirm my fears thats its because of the raw 100gig worth of files is the cause of the lengthy loading.

One fix might be to convert the files to a format that is easier for Vegas to edit. I’ve never used FRAPS footage but I thought the files were very large which would also place a heavy load on your hard drive. Converting to a format that is smaller and easier to edit like Motion JPEG might be a good solution.

4GB of RAM on an x64 system is a bit on the low side. I would consider upgrading your RAM to 12 or even 16 GB if the mobo supports it.

You did not mention how many HDD’s you were using. If you only have 1 HDD, your system will struggle. In this instance, adding a 2nd HDD may only slightly improve things. I agree with John that FRAPS is the cause of the long load times.

    Intel i7 920, 12GB RAM, ASUS P6T, Vegas Pro 10 (x32/x64), Windows 7 x64 Ultimate, Vegas Production Assistant 1.0, VASST Ultimate S Pro 4.1, Neat Video Pro 2.6

yeah i was going to buy ram when i got the upgrade last year but now im just saving up for a i7 rig, i dont have to do much editing to it so i think i can deal with it for the time being
but ill convert my fraps footage to your said format next time i do a project, and i figured as such because

i remember now i had the same problem years ago when i was editing old counterstrike fraps footage windows movie maker couldnt handle all the data and constantly crashed or lagged much to the same extent of the current veags

i have 2HDD’s my main 1TB Black i have everything on, and my 2ndary HDD is a average Blue 500gig were i keep fraps and other non escentuals on, because i have a 2ndary hdd i get better fps in games because the game loads off my main hdd and fraps records the data to my 2ndary harddrive

but sony vegas is on my main hard drive so it trying load all that data from a 2ndary hard drive might also add to the load time Hmmm

Thank you for the quick reply’s and advice.

This is most likely due to the FRAPS codec more than anything else. I currently have Vegas Pro 10.0c running on an old system with a Quad-Core 2.4GHz and only 3GB RAM running on XP (so I can’t add more RAM, actually have 4 installed, XP can only see 3). My system runs fine. I would love a faster system, but it’s OK for now.

If your secondary drives are internal, this should have no performance impact. While I do get better performance when editing on source that is on one of my internal drives, I often use USB 2.0 external drives. A little more sluggish, especially when scrubbing h.264 1920×1080 files, but still not a major problem.

Most of my projects are over 100GB. I just timed loading a project that has 120GB of h.264 1920×1080 files. It took 20 seconds to load, ready to edit, and then another 20 seconds to draw all the timeline thumbnails in the background. This is a multi-cam project with 4 cams, each with audio, plus a few other audio tracks.

Except for a few crashes due to old 3rd party plugins, Vegas Pro 10 is remarkable. The only problem I really have is sometimes it can take many seconds, even a minute, to play the timeline. Weird.
