Running Sony Vegas 10. I have a bunch of questions. First is what settings should I have video preferences if I shot on a FX1 with Sony HD mini DV tapes? We shot at 90 speed in 16:9. Also, my playback is way off. Really choppy. On the external and on the windows preview. I have a good amount of ram and nothing else on my computer except sony vegas. The only problem I can think of is that I’m running windows 7 34 bit and not 64. Having more than 4 gigs of ram I should be running 64, but would this really slow down sony vegas this much?

Do you have any fx applied to the timeline or media? Did you accidentally adjust the opacity slider on the track header (if it is less than 100% you may notice slower playback)?

When you say 90 speed, do you mean 90 frames per second? Are you sure that is right? Normally this will be 60i, 30p, 29.97, 24p, etc if you are in NTSC land.

Make sure your project settings are equal to your your video clips’ settings.

You should use the template that matches your source files. The Sony FX1 shoots HDV at 1440×1080-60i so this is what you should have your project set to. Having your project set improperly can cause playback to slow down.

As Jeremy says, what do you mean by this? 90 is not a valid frame rate or shutter speed for the FX1 so I can’t imagine what you mean.

Thank you guys. Sorry about that, We shot at 60i. When I put the video preferences at HDV 1080 60i, the screen gets smaller. Makes it into a little box and when I render it, instead of how it should look like 16:9 it comes out looking like 16:9 and 4:3. basically the picture is in a little tiny box. And it slows down my playback alot more. But, however, I did figure out that playback on my external monitor is slow and when I use the windows secondary, it’s fine. Which sucks, but it’s whatever at this point.

That doesn’t seem right. Try this:

    • Create a new project (File | New)
    • Select HDV 1080-60i (1440×1080, 29.970 fps) as the project type
    • Drop a clip from the FX1 on the timeline

The clip should completely full the preview window. Make sure that your preview window is set to Preview (Auto).
