Sony VAIO suggestions for Vegas 6
Posted by Kalunga Lima on May 18, 2005 at 6:32 amCan anyone suggest which of the new Sony VAIO notebook computer series (T, FS, S B, or A) is best suited for a portable Vegas 6 solution. Sony Vegas compatibility list simply mentions VAIO notebooks with TI chip, but doesn’t specify which series.

May 18, 2005 at 12:00 pmAs with any of the Vegas products, they rely heavily on processor power and bus speed. The P4’s give you that but are harder on the batteries. If your going to be using AC to power it, then that will be of no concern. In tests using Vegas 5 and a Centrino processor on a laptop a friend of mine discovered that the Centrino does not run that much behind a P4 in rendering. When he added up the savings on the cost of the processor, the extended battery life and the amount of heat that the P4 generates he was very happy he went with a laptop that had the Centrino processor. I would get at least 1 gig of high speed memory if possible also.

May 19, 2005 at 10:08 amMy two cents worth.
Am using a Toshiba ‘Qosmio’ G10, Pentium M 2 Gig Centrino, 2 x 80 Gig drives, 1 Gig ram (can go to 2G), Nvidia GeForce FX Go5700 display with 128 ram, 8 x dual layer burner on our ‘portable’ system. It runs V6 very well. Couple that with a WD 8 Mb cache, 200 Gig external firewire drive and you have a pretty powerful little combo. It runs WinXP ‘Media Centre’ OS which seems to have no problem with V5 or V6. It has a very good 17″ screen especially designed for video and DVD presentation. It also has Component, YC and Composite out. All in all no complaints. Had a Vaio previously and when compared to Sony’s latest VGNA39GP Vaio (if available USA) the Toshiba topped out with the best specs. Was very happy with the Vaio but this ‘Qosmio’ thing is by far the best laptop I have seen for close to desktop type performance in an edit situation.
As previously mentioned the performance isn’t quite up to a P4 but very close on most benchmark tests. As far as power goes it consumes 21 watts as opposed to 100 for the P4 and runs way, way cooler. Both it and the Vaio are at the ‘big’ end so they are fairly chunky units. I believe the Vaio would be a good unit so I guess you takes your ‘pick’. Neither are cheap here in Oz but I felt it worth the expense because I hate slow procs when editing.

May 19, 2005 at 11:34 amGood review! See that’s what I have been hearing too is that the Centrinos are not that much slower than the P4’s and run cooler, longer and save you a lot of cash! You can use that extra cash to get yourself a good external hard drive and you are set to edit on the road! Or load it up with even more memory.
