Installed the Sony Sound Loops and Samples Library…
Everything is grayed out, so I can’t even preview the sounds. Not sure how this is helpful? Or did I do something wrong?

    thanks

Yea, it’s kind of confusing and you didn’t do anything wrong.

The library is just a catalog of sounds and not the actual sounds themselves. It is for people who own the loop libraries. As you buy them, they are already cataloged, categorized, and tagged, which is a tremendous time saver. The grayed out ones allow you to see what is available but you must go to the Sony site to purchase them.

    Thanks…
It really seems pretty useless then! I would think some samples would make sense. Guess it’s just a marketing ploy, but not a very good one. Even when you get to the website, the interface is not friendly at all.

You can get free samples every week here https://www.acidplanet.com/downloads/8Packs/

    Download and catalogue them yourself.

You don’t understand it’s purpose then. I have tons of Sony loop libraries. The thought of cataloging them all, and tagging them all, and categorizing them all is daunting. Sony has done a tremendous favor to loop consumers by doing all the hard work for us. It is an *extremely* valuable library.

If you thought it was a “loop sampler” then you misunderstood what Sony has done and why they made it available.

When I was setting up media manager, it was recommended to install the Loops and Samples. When I found out that the Samples weren’t “samples”, it seemed that it was a ploy to get people to buy these… It’s great that Sony set up the catalog, but why have it for those not buying libraries? Why not get the catalog when you buy a library?

Guess I should have investigated more closely before installing.

I agree if you have no intention of buying loop libraries, there is no need for you to ever install this add-on.

[ron labbe] “Why not get the catalog when you buy a library? “

It’s an architectural constraint. There can be only one “reference library” so all of the tags need to be on one catalog. I guess it would be too complicated to ship a catalog which each loop CD and then somehow merge them.

BTW, if you think about why the samples aren’t included for a second… this is one of those cases where if Sony gave you a 1 measure sample of a 1 measure loop, they’ve essentially given you the product for free and there is no incentive to buy. You can argue that the sample would be lower quality, but that has never stopped anyone from placing low quality samples from the Internet into their projects. People just don’t care so it’s hard to walk that fine line of giving away too much.

But… if you hit the BUY button, samples are there, online. So, not sure what the difference is. ?

I’m not sure that you can buy individual samples. I don’t have the Media Manager installed on my laptop so I can’t check right now. I usually buy the whole CD. I can’t imagine that Sony gives you the sample before you buy it. They usually have a few representative loops that you can download and play. So yes, the loop library servers as a way to search for loops via their tags and buy them too.
