The good news is I had no problem streaming the Sony PXW-70 to VLC locally.
In the camera I set the IP address of the host computer and port 1234.
In VLC I set the Network URL to
    udp://:1234
    and video appeared.

Unless I missed it the camera manual (and firmware upgrade manual) mention nothing about the protocol (udp) nor the codec container or IP address of the camera.

Since this is clearly an Ian question, perhaps you can provide an explanation.

Outside of a few geeks I suspect the typical end user will completely lost.

    Somewhere should be listed:
    protocol
    streaming codec and container
    device IP address
I’d think this would be important info. While there’s a plethora of streaming software that Sonly can’t address specifically it would be important to provide all the tech details so the end user could figure out how to implement.

EDIT I found some of the information in the appendix of the Upgrade manual

    MPEG-2 TS/UDP
