    Hi there,

I’m trying to master a sequence from an Avid Adrenaline onto a Sony PVW-2800P betacam deck.

The sequence has one audio track, mixed centrally (so it comes out both L and R channels on playback).

There are two XLR cables coming out the back of the Adrenaline breakout box – one out of ‘Analog Out 1’ and another out of ‘Analog Out 2’. These go into ‘Audio Input Channel 1’ and ‘Audio Input Channel 2’ on the Sony deck.

When performing the Digital Cut, the meters on the front of the deck both move (for channels 1 & 2) but when I play it back after recording, it has only recorded on channel 1.

Anybody have any ideas on how to get this recording on 2 channels instead of 1. I’ve tried just about everything I can think of…

The settings on the digital cut are:
    ignore timecode – on
    entire sequence – on
video effects safe mode – on
    crrash record – on

Couple of thoughts – in Avid, are the audio output settings set to direct, stereo, or mono (which is what you want here, right?).
To check, bring up the audio meters, press button on top of meter window that looks like there dots and three rectangles. If set to direct, make sure ch.1 is routed to ch.1 and ch.2 to ch.2, but Ideally this would be set to mono.
On front of that deck, is there not a switch that allows mixing of audio channels? I’m not near one today, but I believe the switch must be centered.

selct play calibration tone from your meter menu until you see all your output meters showing tone, then put you pvw in local and hold the record button down, if both meters respond then your cabling is correct.

If not then trying swapping the input cables around, if the other needle now moves then you have a cable / avid issue, if not then it is a vt issue. I haven’t looked recently but there may be routing options in the pvw menu settings.

Then let your sequence play as normal and press the record button again to monitor incoming audio, if both needles respond then you need to check track selection in your digital cut tool.

As I recall the audio mix button on the front of a pvw only effects monitor out not input.

you are correct about the output switch, it just determines what’s coming out the headphone jack and the monitor output on the back of the VTR. I’d check that the black pots labelled “PB” on the front of the VTR are pushed in. If that’s not it try playing the tape on another VTR; that’ll help you figure whether your recorder has a dead playback or dead record audio head and/or circuit.

Just a note on what you’re trying to do….why put the same program content on two channels if the master is neither stereo nor 2-track mono, ie. Clip/VO on 1 M/FX on 2?

    good luck
