Sony NEX 3 or Canon T2i (550d)
So here’s the issue I’m facing. I’m trying to create production videos for some mobile apps by filming iPhone, iPad and even my Mac’s screen.
Currently I have a Sony NEX 3 with the 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 kit lens. I tried filming my Mac screen with this setup to test things out and the quality came out terrible. The big issue was when I had to zoom in to get a close-up of the details on the screen. Which gave me terrible quality after the f-stop shot up from 3.5 to 5.6 from zooming in.
What I’m debating is if I should pick up a Canon T2i (550d) as I’ve seen people on YouTube using this camera for filming similar things and they get great quality.
From what I’ve read, the NEX 3’s sensor is actually 10% larger so in my mind the video quality should be better than the Canon’s but that really doesn’t seem true. In your opinion, what would be my better option?

First of all things like sensor size and megapixels do not automatically create better images – a lot has to do with the quality of the engineering.
The issue you are having is with the lens…it is not fixed aperture which means it is going to get darker as you zoom in. Sony does sell a fixed aperture wide angle lens:
It’s 16mm and 2.8 which is fairly fast – helpful for those narrow depth of field shots. That’s about $250 and would be a much cheaper solution than buying the T2i – now I’m a big fan of the T2i, that’s the only camera I use right now, but still it might be worth trying this cheaper alternative out first – if later you get the T2i you can keep the Sony as your “B” camera for either multicam shoots or as a backup unit.
