I just received a Sony DCRDVD108 as a gift- it records onto one of those mini DVDs. Does anyone know if I will still be able to capture the footage into FCP using the traditional fire wire and capture window? According to the Sony webchat guy, the data recorded onto the desk is mpeg4. I have no idea what that means, but it seems like something super compressed and not something that can be captured?
    Thanks!

    Yes, it is super-compressed.
Not the best choice for aquisition into an edit.

But you can edit the footage in FCP if you convert the mpeg into a Quicktime movie.

To “capture” the footage for use in FCP….

You would simply “finalize” the DVD in the camera (that makes it playable in any stnadard DVD player) and then put the DVD into your Mac’s DVD drive.

Then use a DVD “ripper” program to convert the mpeg files into a Quicktime Movie for use in FCP,

MPEG SlipStream is a very popular DVD ripper-

Thanks so much. Good to know. I think I’m going to exchange the camera for one that has an idv port so that I can actually capture into FCP. But if that option is too pricey, I’ll use a ripper :o)

    Hello:
Can you tell me if this process would work with iMovie? I hate to order FCP since it’s so expensive (unless Final Cut Express would work). Can you let me know if iMovie or FCE would work? Thanks.
