Sony HVR-V1U Question
After weeks of research and discovering the HVR-V1U to be the camera for me, I found out that only still photos can be saved on the memory card and not video. Is this true? If so, how big of a hurdle is this? I am a first-time documentary film maker and am looking to have the easiest setup within a reasonable price range ($2,000 give or take for a camera). Should I just bite the bullet and do the HD converter apparatus or look for another camera?

I purchased the V1u back in 2007 because it could shoot everything from miniDV in wide and full screen to DVCAM to HDV all in 60i/30p/24p it was Sony’s first 24p camera. Back then clients were asking for 24p all the time. Although I now shoot with an amazing PMW-F3 with Sony’s 18-252 zoom – the trusty old V1u still has a place because two years ago I purchased a Sony MRU.

This little recorder is really solid. For the HVR-V1u, it fits to the cold shoe mount at the top of the camera. No need for tape any more and you can get 72minutes of record time on one 16gb Compactflash card. You’ll need “Clipwrap” software to convert the m2t files to AppleProRes422 or another codec. Keep in mind the HDV spec is only 1080×1440

Is it really worth the $500+ price tag just to get the MRU? Is there another camera that shoots on flash drive that you would recommend instead ($1500-3000)?

If I were you……I’d get an extra job, cut back, save and buy a Sony PMW-100. There is a $500 rebate until end of this year. The extra cost will be nothing when you spread it over the next 10+years you use it. (I was thinking you already owned a HVR-V1u)
