    Hi

Just wondering if anyone out there can recommend a nice (student friendly) online workflow for Sony FS100 and FS700 cameras in Avid Media Composer 6.5 (on Macs). We have traditionally taught our students an online workflow for FS100 cameras using Final Cut Pro 7, but are now looking to move to Media Composer 6.5

I am particularly interested in what codecs people are transcoding to and how, any problems with the longer spanned FS100 clips, and what colour profile to use when transcoding in Avid

    Thanks in advance

Are you looking to teach offline/online as an exercise? Looking at the data rates of the AVCH codec, there is no real need to do that as it can be directly linked via AMA and a single transcode to a DNxHD 145 family of codecs will be good enough to master with. The camera records in Rec.709 so that is the project type you will use.

If you want to do an offline/online scenario, you can always transcode to a lower DNxHD data rate such as DNxHD 36, then relink back to the original camera files for finish.

Is this what you are looking to do?

Thanks for the post Michael. At this stage we are looking to keep with just an online scenario as it reflects what the students used to do in FCP (including a quick grade and sound mix in the limited time they get in the edit suite)
