Where did the file come from? What codec does the mp4 use? It sounds like Vegas doesn’t support it or recognized it but wasn’t prepared for what was in the file.

OK, I just downloaded some test footage from the Flip Mino HD and dropped it into Vegas Pro 9.0b and it played fine. Are you using the 9.0b version of Vegas Pro (which is currently the latest). If not, you should update to the 9.0b version.

I did notice that playback was choppy until I set the project to match the media (specifically 30.00fps instead of 29.97). After that Vegas Pro 9.0b smoothly played back the Flip Mino HD mp4 file at full frame rates with pretty impressive quality.

Here is how you match the project to the media using the Project Properties (Alt+Enter) window:

If updating to 9.0b and matching the project to the media doesn’t fix your problem, then you may need to convert the files to a format that is easier for Vegas to edit. I used Avidemux 2.5 to convert the file to MJPEG video with PCM audio and it played back smoothly in Vegas as well. You could also use the HuffYUV or Lagarith codec for even higher quality (and larger file size).
