Can you imagine paying that price for a camera that records to heavily compressed 4:2:0?!!! One might say it includes a proxy format encoder while one waits until next year for Sony to include the Dual Link support. Otherwise it’s a candidate for the AJA KiProMini for Apple ProRes.

It’s really strange calling it a hand held camera too.

I wonder why the F didn’t get the 50Mbps 4:2:2 codec, or will it when it finally ships. The SR digital file system will be an interesting new development. However it won’t be long before someone offers up a completely uncompressed digital recorder at an affordable price to use with these new indie cameras.

Oh and what were they thinking with that ridiculous looking viewfinder on the back of the camera. It has the same hand grip with zoom control as the EX3 so there must be a zoom lens on the way.

Yup and it’s PL mount only with an adapter. In other words same price as a RED but much worse codec and not a native PL mount. Yet people will buy much more of these just because it’s Sony- the trusted brand. And they know this…

I’ve generally been saying all this to others as well.

I think the F3 is camera placed right in the middle of no current market.
Way too expensive to compete with AF100
Not enough features to compete with RED

I see it selling to F35 broadcast productions that don’t want to get additional F35 . . . when Dual Link actually comes out.

It’s just the wrong price point and wrong set of features to get beyond that. I’m not sure if “trusted” is the best selling point in a world of shrinking budgets . . . except it’s a lot less expensive than an F35.

This is another example of how out of tune with users the manufacturers are.
However, this camera has an advantage over the PANA: This one output 10b Unc through the SDI, while the PANA is just 8b.
In the other hand I wouldn’t compare it with the RED. This still being a camcorder and can be managed for just one guy. The RED needs a team behind.
