Sony Ex1 workflow in Vegas
Posted by Marius Boruch on March 19, 2008 at 5:09 pmHow the footage from SxS cards is transfered to vegas? Is Vegas using some sort of CineForm codec?

You can Xfer the footage from the Express card via the Clip Browser (came with your EX1, you’ll want to download the latest update) which converts the mp4 file to an .mxf file. It’s very fast. The .mxf files are then dropped on the Vegas timeline.
There is a thorough tutorial on this found at the VASST website, if you need more info.Douglas Spotted Eagle

March 19, 2008 at 9:14 pmDSE, Do you still use Cineform, or have you found that compositing with the mxf files to be just as good?
Also, I’ve been reading that the resolution on the EX1 is “too good” for SD delivery, and that horizontal lines get very “stair stepped.” I figure you have tons of experience at this point with that, so no one would know better than you.
Any thoughts? -

I downloaded some .mxf files from other user, placed them in Vegas timeline and … my computer preview rate was just 3-4 fps. (Impossible to edit at all!!!) When I work with HDV files captured in Vegas I edit in real time on the same computer. That’s why I asked if that’s normal thing, if yes – how fast computer I have to have to edit in real time? -

March 20, 2008 at 4:47 am3-4 frames is pretty bad, but without ‘puter specs, I can’t answer it too well. I have an older dual core as my main editing system and edit XD EX all day, full framerate. Dual 270 procs (yes, it’s that old).
Are you running antivirus too?Douglas Spotted Eagle

March 20, 2008 at 5:41 amI am working on AMD 4400+ and NVidia 8800 GTS but next week I was about to build new system based on Q6600 and maybe additional 8800 GTS in SLI configuration; that’s why I am kind of surprised by power requirements of EX1 files and I didn’t know if new system will have enough power to handle EX1 files.
Where can I find that info on VASST web site? Could you please send me some links. Thanks in advance. -

March 20, 2008 at 5:36 pmAs a follow-up to this question, I’m wondering how important a 3D card is for video editing. I’ve got a low end 6200LE in my computer at work and normal editing doesn’t seem much different than at home where I have an 8800GT. Do a lot of you get higher end cards because there’s a significant speed difference in Vegas, or do you also do 3D modeling and play Quake Wars? I always thought the playback framerate relied more on the CPU, and obviously rendering.

March 20, 2008 at 10:00 pmI never play video games – it is a waste of time and life for me… but I am using high end 8800 GTS because I use Magic Bullets plugin (film look) and all of those effects are rendered by GPU. It makes huge difference when using MB.
