Sony EX footage into Premiere
Posted by Ron Pestes on August 4, 2011 at 7:31 pmHello,
I am a recent FCP convert coming over to PP. I am wondering how to get footage from my Sony EX-3 into PP. I am using a Windows computer and have XDCAM Browser. I can get the BPAV folder into the computer but don’t know how to convert the files so I can see them and use them. What is my next step? Thanks…

August 4, 2011 at 9:31 pmNo conversion necessary! Simply use the Media Browser within PPro to import your BPAV folder. PPro will import the XDCAM video files and reject everything else that it doesn’t see as footage. Earlier on with CS3 and CS4 we tended to have a bit of sluggishness with EX-3 footage, and transcoding to Cineform was the answer. However, with CS5 and a pretty beefy machine, the files work well natively.

August 5, 2011 at 12:33 amOK…sorry, was going by your signature. If you aren’t able to play your XDCAM clips in Windows, try installing this free player which should take care of it. You can also upgrade to the latest version of Windows Media Player, but I’m partial to the VLC player.

“EX clips are not any easier to “browse” than P2 footage in their native form as the actual video essence file is rather deeply integrated with the metadata folders, etc.
The XDcamEX clipbrowser is the fastest way to look at clips outside of PPro itself in my experience.
